    Renewed Sense of Purpose?

I just have a feeling of malaise creeping in with this team. The highlight of the offseason was the draft and it looks like Holmes and Reid are the only bright spots. (Yeah I admit it Reid has looked very good recently) I didnt expect too much but I thought there would be a renewed sense of purpose after the Super Bowl. It seems like there is little sense of purpose. I hate the fact that they seem totally happy with the running backs they have. I think Staley is an out of shape has been. As much as I liked the initial pick up of Staley, it is time fo rhim to move on. I think Willie Parker is a talent but not an every down guy. The idea of using him in Bettis' role as short yardage specialist is ludicrous and the rest are marginal players with the excpetion of the usefull Verron Haynes. I would have been happy with some attempt to sign a guy who can move the sticks on 3rd and 3 or 4! TJ Duckett even. I guess we are going to ask Ben to throw it much more frequently than in past years. Maybe not a bad idea, but I love the running game so much and it
pains me to think that they will be getting into winged warfare with the Cincy's of the world. NOT our forte.

We could have 3 or 4 injuries, then what? The depth is very questionable. It really showed up in the Carolina game. The Panthers seem to be able to run out good player after good player on the defensive side of the ball.

These cuts make me even more cautious about this year. I Know the preseason is a joke but I didn't see much fire in the starters out there. Look at Carson Palmer! He was fireballing against the Colts. They`d better hitch up their pants because its going to be one team after another gunning for them. I am not saying they can't do it.. I just see complancency where there should be resolve. Admittedly, its more of an impression, but I dont think I am alone.

No matter what happens, Win, Lose or Tie....I am a Steeler fan til I die

Lyn, i dont think you could have put it better than that.....only thing im hoping for is these guys put there heart and soul into this season, they are the defending champs and they need to show everyone out there why they are the defending champs....i think thursday night is going to show us how much our boys want that title to stay in Pitt.

As far as Carson goes, he's got something to prove coming off that major injury so he was more fired up and excited about preseason then most other veterans are..nonetheless he did look good.

As far as our RB's...I question keeping Staley but the way I can figure it, BC wants to have some veteran leadership there and someone with alot of experience. Willie is coming into his own but has things to learn and perfect, I have no doubt that he can do it. Verron is not used to being an every down back but he'll get more experience now and more carries translates into getting more comfortable in his new role. He runs hard and is a good receiver out the backfield too. Cobb seems to have a big upside and if Bellicheck loves him then thats good enough for me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think you'll see a different team come the regular season..BC has been drilling into these guys heads how the SB means nothing and the last thing they want to do is follow up a SB season with a poor showing. It took us a LONG time to get that 5th ring and nobody wants to wait that long again. The core leadership is there, yes without Jerome, but we have enough leaders who can rally the troops.

Also with BC's future up in the air, the team knows this may be the last year they get to play with him and if it is, the last thing they want to do is send him out on a bad note.

There's alot to look forward to this year, sure there are some question marks...
    * Will 2 QB's be the right move, instead of 3
    * Will Ryan Clark be able to play along side Troy and be effective
    * Will Duce stay healthy and be a viable backup option if needed
    * Can Nate Washington step up into a more prominant role
    * Will Holmes live up to his 1st round draft pick expectations

But all in all, Im excited for this year.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am estatic the season is finally here and I am very excited about it. BUT (you knew that was coming, right?) LOL many little things bother me a tad i.e:

Four of the five draft picks made after the fourth round were cut - Harris, Jacobs, Davis and Humes - with only sixth-round center Marvin Philip making it.

The Steelers have never cut so many picks since director of football operations Kevin Colbert took over seven years ago, but they also have never had so little roster turnover during an offseason.

WP was interviewed he comes across beautifully as a modest guy who has achieved his dream and is now cognizant of what is expected of him. I hope he turns out to be a durable James Brooks but I have my doubts. He is built alot like LT.

I am a self admitted worry wort, I feel nervous at the start of every season until I get a few games under my belt then around week 4 I lose the jitters.

I agree as far as draft picks go on the second day we didn't fair so well, but fortunately we had a bit of a luxury with most the starters returning and already having atleast some decent depth at most positions. I would have liked to see more of them stick around and if we were in a rebuilding year I think more of them would have...but BC wants to keep this run going as long as he can and with most of them returning, it gives us the best chance to repeat..as opposed to letting more young guys start.

Im far from over confident, I worry too ! I just try to look at things in a positive manner as I can when it comes to the Steelers, yet still be objective. It's not going to be easy by any stretch and there will lapses of concentration just like every other year but if this is BC's last year, I hope he goes out with another SB trophy !

Lyn, you got about the post I've ever read for this season. This team got Question marks all over their foreheads. I am questioning the move of the 2 QBs that are so darn fragile and the fact we didn't cut Staley. I am also ticked off over cutting Quincy Morgan and John Kuhn. This is getting nerve wrecking. I bleed Black n Gold through thick and thin. The way the moves went, I see us going 11-5 and still winning the AFC North.
