Post Sports agent Leigh Steinberg arrested for DUI

By Garrett Therolf, Times Staff Writer
    11:42 AM PDT, April 13, 2007

Powerhouse sports agent Leigh Steinberg, who is said to have inspired the title character in the movie "Jerry Maguire," was arrested early this morning in Newport Beach for drunk driving after he slammed his car into three parked cars.

The accident occurred near the Balboa Bay Club around 1 a.m. while Steinberg drove home on Pacific Coast Highway in his Mercedes ML 500 sports utility vehicle, said Newport Beach police Lt. Craig Fox.

Steinberg, 58, provided a blood sample that showed him to be intoxicated and driving above the legal blood-alcohol limit. He was held in jail until he was released on his own recognizance at 7 a.m.

In 1997, Steinberg was arrested for drunk driving in Newport Beach after rear-ending another vehicle.

Steinberg, a Newport Beach resident, has represented a gallery of superstar athletes, including football stars Steve Young and Troy Aikman.

"Jerry Maguire," starring Tom Cruise as a sports agent who is stricken with a conscience, is more than loosely based on the lifestyle of Steinberg, right down to the contents of his wallet. Steinberg's office-window view of Newport Center can be seen in the movie, and he is credited as a technical consultant.

Wow, and so close to the draft too He'll still be looking to increase his wealth 100 fold with all the draft picks he'll be doing contracts for so it's not like this will have major reprocussions for him in the long run.

Dumb move though Leigh, no doubt
