A brief history of the Bengals: The Bengals joined the AFL in 1968, made the playoffs the first year of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, were good in the mid-'70s, had a surprise season from nowhere and reached the Super Bowl in 1982, crazy Sam Wyche took over and they had another surprise Super Bowl trip in 1989, Stanley Wilson got coked up the night before that game and Bengals lost again to the 49ers, then came a string of about 15 consecutive crappy drafts, Carson Palmer got cheap-shotted in the playoffs and then the entire team got arrested.

Soul-sucking moment: Montana to John Taylor.

They are very bitter fans. I remember in 1997, I was a M.C. recruiter in a suburb of Philly. The Flyers were in the Stanley Cup finals and the whole town was so stoked. They even had a big Flyers jersey made and put it on old Benjamin Franklin who sits atop one of the buildings in downtown Philly. Well, the Flyers got swept and for weeks I had to take a boat to work because the tears were flowing in rivers. Old Ben probably never undressed as quickly in real life as that statue did after the sweep. It probably wasn't safe for the team members to be seen in public for awhile afterwards. Philly fans are very bitter for all the near misses their sports teams have had. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, so to speak. Guess I would be too if I was in their shoes.
