Steelers Notebook: Hurry-up offense effective with Roethlisberger

Were the Steelers unveiling a new wrinkle or merely giving quarterback Ben Roethlisberger some work in the hurry-up offense?

Whichever, offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt had Roethlisberger use a no-huddle offense for the Steelers' first series, which lasted six plays and resulted in a 16-yard touchdown pass to receiver Cedrick Wilson.

"We worked on it in training camp and Ben expressed an interest in wanting to do that," Whisenhunt said. "That's the key. I think Ben has progressed with it."

Whisenhunt said the no-huddle offense he used in last night's 17-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at Heinz Field is not the same as the one-minute offense the Steelers use at the end of a half.

Will the Steelers use more of no-huddle once the regular season begins?

"It depends on how we execute," said Roethlisberger, who completed 3 of 4 passes for 30 yards without an interception. "If we keep executing how we are, I think it could be a major weapon for us."

Whisenhunt said, "It will be part of our package."

Im surprised with showing the no huddle in preseason like that. Im glad we have it and the team really seems to do well with it. Ben was pretty solid and accurate. You gotta practice it some time I guess but still it just struck me as alittle odd to see us come right out w/ the no huddle the very first drive.

You never know. They may jusy be doing it to give teams another thing to think about while preparing to play us. Either way I think Ben can do it without any problems.

It looked very effective. I agree with Ben they keep making it work it's a major weapon in our arsenal.

I agree Prosdo. Look at the 5 WR's we could put out there as well. With Ward, Wilson, Washington, Holmes and Reid. You can't cover all of them. Now the trick will be for the Oline to protect Ben in the no huddle.

It really threw the Vikings off and it was suprising to use it as BRC said but whatever works makes me happy. Ben looked like he was always in control of the team which is good when runnign the no huddle. As soon as you lose control then all hell breaks loose and no one is on the same page.

Whatever we can do to help keep defenses thinking is all the better. If we have it in our arsenal and we use it effectively then by all means lets take it to em !

i hope we do start doing the hurry up offense more often, it's funner to watch. and it'll be good to see ben actually get to show what he gots. damn i can't wait for the games to start counting

Yeah a ton of people kiss Peyton Manning's ass because he "can run the shotgun and hurry up so well" but a guy like Ben might be just as good but has never got to show it. I'd love seeing this more in the regular season because a no huddle drive in the 1st quarter throws teams off.

offtopic: pitt23 why would you ever admit to being a #1 fan of a kicker?? lol and you need to fix the schedule, you have us playing the bengals twice at home lol
