Four crew chiefs tossed from Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR put the hammer down on Tuesday.

n an effort to send a strong message that cheating is not tolerated in the Nextel Cup Series, the governing body suspended an unprecedented four crew chiefs for Sunday's season-opening Daytona 500.Kenny Francis and Robbie Reiser, the crew chiefs for Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth, were suspended a total of four races and fined $50,000 each for violations discovered during post-qualifying inspection on Sunday.
In addition, Kahne and Kenseth were docked 50 championship points and their car owners, Ray Evernham and Jack Roush, were docked 50 owners' points.
Rodney Childers and Josh Browne, the crew chiefs for Scott Riggs and Elliott Sadler -- Kahne's teammates at Evernham Motorsports -- were suspended two races and fined $25,000.
The drivers were docked 25 championship points each and Evernham was docked 25 owner points for each.
It is the first time in Cup history that four crew chiefs were sent home from one race.
All four can appeal, which would allow them to participate in the 500 because the hearing would not take place until after the race. Geoff Smith, the president of Roush Racing, is considering an appeal for Reiser. Evernham was undecided.

they came down hard on michael waltrip today. appearantly they were smearing what has been described as a type of "sterno gel" or airplane fuel, on the inside of the intake manifold. what this does is melts into the fuel before it is burnt and produces more horsepower. pretty much an unprescedented form of cheating.

There's not a crew out there that isn't cheating in some way. They just haven't been caught yet.....lol If they really want to stop the cheating they need to suspend the drivers and not just dock them points. They won't do that though because it would cost Nascar money.

It's a shame that this much cheating goes on throughout the world of sports! Everybody trying to get an advantage on the next guy and all it does is put an "*" by their name... when is it going to end!

I thought for sure Nascar was one of the cleanest sports but I guess I was wrong... Who thinks up of these ways to cheat anyways?

i figured you would be. maybe kenseth can get through it as well as johnson did last season.

az-steeler, cheating in nascar is a whole different animal than in other sports. theres only so much you can do to a football, golf ball, or baseball bat. however, the technology of the automobile is constantly changing and evolving. their are tons of engineers who work for the race teams, constantly figuring out ways to make the cars go faster. those few who make the rules in nascar are constantly trying to keep up with them and adapt the rules to the technology.

it is an accepted phrase "if you aint cheating and you aint trying". nascar has more gray areas inbetween the written rules, than any other sport. it is the teams responsibility to push the boundries of these gray areas.
