Prospect of the Day - Ed Reynolds

    Ed Reynolds, FS, Stanford

Reynolds declaring for the draft prior to the deadline made a pretty bad safety class looks like It could end up being pretty solid in the Mid-late first and second rounds. Reynolds is currently my 3rd Ranked safety after Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor.

Reynolds may very well be a slam dunk steelers pick if he is sitting there in the second round. At 6-2 205 he comes in as a long centerfielder with excellent ball skills, recovery speed, and return ability. The steelers should not retain ryan clark so FS becomes an immediate need for them with Shamarko thomas having decent NB coverage skills but the overall skill set of a more in the box SS.

Reynolds is a very iffy tackler in my opinion, he excels in making big plays and is excellent in coverage but at this point hes not the best tackler and not very good in run support. One thing about that is the steelers dont let DBs get off with missing tackling drills. Ike Taylor, Keenan Lewis, William Gay, and Ryan clark are among some of the best tackling defensive backs in the league because it is something that is worked on constantly, a pretty underrated aspect of the steelers defense over the last decade.

All in all he is a very smart and instinctive player, needs to get stronger and more physical but that is something that can be improved on. I would be excited about the future tandem of Reynolds and Shamarko.

What I like about Reynolds is that he can catch the ball, a trait we need badly in our secondary and has the size to cover the big athletic TEs. Everything I have read about him says he is a smart kid too (no surprise as a Stanford kid), so perhaps he can pick up the D a little quicker than most. I think intelligence is one of the most overlooked traits in a football player. He would be a second round steal.

    good write up.

I think you over-emphasized some weaknesses (tackling specifically) and under-emphasized a key strength (football IQ)

I'm a bit obsessed with Reynolds... he fits perfectly in my dream future where we begin to play more man press. (here comes a comparison that is meant as a schematic comparison and NOT a direct player comparison). Earl Thomas' deep range as a centerfielder allows the Seahawks to both blitz and play man press almost exclusively. If you want to be a dominant defense in today's game, you need to be able to play man press and get to the QB.

The Steelers don't have anything that remotely resembles a deep, play recognition, cover 1, safety... and they haven't had one... in forever.

If the Steelers intend to fill the position with another Hope/Clark... then Reynolds might not be the guy.

But I have to believe they are going to "augment" their schemes with the changes in the NFL.

and while I am still on the "Big WR" train in the 1st... I must say, that a Dennard/Reynolds combination in the 1st/2nd could be a total game changing package that would allow them to transition coverages to more Man/Press/Cover 1... while maintaining a fire zone front 7.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I like Deone Bucannon better than Reynolds

But I agree with Neil in the man press , cover 1 ... and Bucannon has good ball skills and is an intimidating presence across the middle
Now Bucannon won't be manning anybody up at least hasn't shown the ability too ... but Shamarko can be our slot safety ... Bucannon could be a Kam Chancellor with more range

    my dream draft
    rd 1 -Dennard / Gilbert / Stanley Jean-Baptiste
    rd 2 - Bucannon / Paul Richardson
    rd 3 - Paul Richardson / Bucannon

only problem is not sure if Paul or Bucannon would fall to the end of the 3rd
