    Steelers Offseason Plan

Im working on putting this all together in greater detail cap wise... but for now...

    UFA (Let walk)
    - Sanders
    - Ryan Clark
    - Ziggy Hood
    - Keisel
    - Whimper
    - W.Allen
    - Burress
    - Dwyer
    - LSH
    - Sylvester

CUT or TAKE A PAY CUT
    - Ike Taylor (12 mil cap hit)- There's no way to sugar coat it. Ike Taylor doesn't "deserve" to be cut, even though a large portion of the fan base doesn't understand football and blames him every time a football is caught and he's on the screen. But he's 34, and cutting him saves 7 million in cap space. I would leave open the idea that he could return if he took a massive pay cut from his 7 million base salary, to say 2 million. That would mean we could keep him at a cap hit of 7 million. I'd rather have Ike for a year at 7 million in cap space, then have No Ike, and 5 million in dead space... side note : could Ike move to FS ? Many athletic corners have done it later in their careers. (yea yea, he can't catch...)

    Cut Savings: 7 Million
    (I cut him)
    or
Pay Cut: 1 Year / 2 million guaranteed salary
Cap Hit: 7 million (includes remaining prorated bonus from current contract)

    CUT or EXTEND
-Troy (10.9 cap) needs to decide if he wants to finish his career as a Steeler. If he does, it will require taking a far below market deal. Cutting Troy saved 8.25, with only 2.6 in dead space. That's a no brainer. However, We could re-sign Troy for 2-3 more seasons as he's proved this year, that when healthy, he's still at the top of the game.

    Cut Savings: 8.25 million
    or
New Contract proposal: 5 Years / 37 million (I extended)
    15 million in signing bonus
5 million in guaranteed salary in the first 2 seasons
    Cap hits of (2014-2018): 6.6, 7, 8, 8, 10

    CUT or EXTEND

    - Heath Miller cannot be paid like a top 3 TE... He's still a very good TE, but he's simply not dynamic enough to eat 9.5 in cap space. He should be extended to finish his career here... but not at market value. Cutting him saves 6 million in cap space.

    Cut Savings: 6 million
    or
    New Contract proposal: (I extended)
    5 years / 28 million
    8 million in signing bonus
4 million in guaranteed salary in the first 2 seasons
    Cap hits of (2014-2018): 6, 4.6, 5.6, 6.6, 8.6

    EXTEND

    - Ben needs to get a new deal that gives us some flexibility the next few years... with current restructures its difficult to do without him taking a discount... rip up the remaining 2 years... Ben says he'll do what it takes...

    Proposed Contract : 7 years / 100 million / 39 million guaranteed
    Cap hits of (2014-2020): 12.8, 12.8, 19, 19, 24, 20, 26

    EASY CUTS
    McLendon - saves 1.8
    Foote - saves 1.2

    EXTEND Heyward
    - Do it NOW!!!
    5 yrs / 18 million / 8 million guaranteed
    Cap hits 2014-2018 : 4, 5.1, 5.1, 7.1, 8.6

    TRADE Pouncey
    - Not going to get much, but a late round pick is fine

    Re-Sign UFAs

    - Velasco : 4 yrs / 12 million
structured with workout and roster bonuses to protect in the first 2 years against injury results
    Cap hits 2014-2017 : 2, 2.5, 3.0, 4.5

    - Cody Wallace : 1 YR / 570K / ERFA tender

    - Al Woods : 4 yrs / 9 million / 2.8 guaranteed
    Cap hits 2014-2017 : 2.1, 2.5, 3.2, 4

    - Cotchery : 2 yrs / 5 million / Fully Guaranteed
    Cap hits 2014-2015: 2.5, 2.5

    - Warren : 1 yr / 900k

    - F. Jones : 2 yrs / 2.5 million / 500k guaranteed
    Cap hits 2014-2015: 1.25, 1.25

    Find a way
    - Worrilds : 3 yrs / 18 million / 8 million guaranteed
    Cap hits 2014-2016: 4, 7, 7

    QB : Ben, Gradkowski, Jones
    RB : Bell, Jones, Johnson
WR : Brown, Cotchery, Wheaton, Moye
    TE : Heath, Spaeth, Paulson
    OT : Beachum, Gilbert, Adams
    OG : Decastro, Foster, Embernate
    OC : Velasco, Wallace

    21 players

    NT : Woods, Fangupo, Williams
    DE : Heyward, Arnfelt
ILB : Timmons, Williams, Garvin, Spence
OLB : Woodley, Worrilds, Jones, Carter
CB : Allen, Gay, Brown, Blake
    S : Troy, Shamarko, Golden

    20 players

    K: Suisham
    P: McBriar
    LS: Warren

    3 players

These moves put us at 116 million... with 44 players signed.... in a perfect world....
That leaves us about 10 million to play with in terms of signing some depth, and signing a new rookie class.
    Banana Fett !?!? Where???

    My Mood
    Fine
I'd keep Dwyer over Jones. I have no issue keeping Ziggy. I'd Cut or trade Woodley and Sign Worilds.
I Love TRoy but I'm not extending him 5 years. He needs to take a cut because his play doesn't match that salary. Same thing for Ike, Pay cut. Not Cutting McLendon.

Keith Butler is my New DC.
