Steelers sign Jarvis Jones and Le'Veon Bell

The Steelers have reportedly given quarterback Ben Roethlisberger more power in the direction of the offense.

How Roethlisberger will wield this power remains to be seen, but he could use it to push for more playing time for rookie running back Le’Veon Bell now that the Steelers have signed the second-round pick to a four-year deal. The Steelers announced the deal Monday, leaving them with three of their nine 2013 draft picks unsigned.

Bell ran for 3,346 yards and 33 touchdowns during his career at Michigan State and will have to beat out Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman for playing time as a rookie. It should help his cause that the Steelers have talked him up as a three-down back thanks to his ability to both pass block and catch the ball out of the backfield for a team that likes to throw the ball.

The Steelers averaged 3.7 yards per carry in 2012, their lowest average since 2008 and a clear reason why the team addressed running back early in the draft. If Bell gives them better production than they got last year, the Steelers’ chances of bettering their record will greatly improve.

The Steelers have their first-round pick under contract.

The club announced Monday that it had reached a deal with outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, the No. 17 pick in the 2013 draft.

Jones recorded 28 sacks in two seasons for Georgia, including 14.5 in 2012. He will play outside linebacker in the Steelers’ 3-4 defense.

Now, the focus turns to how Jones progresses in the Steelers’ scheme. The Steelers have a veteran-laden roster on defense, and rookies can take some time to adjust to Dick LeBeau’s scheme. Nevertheless, Jones would figure to contribute in some form or fashion in his first season, with his rush ability likely his ticket onto the field.

@EdBouchette: Steelers sign Jarvis Jones for $8.5 M with $4.7 M signing bonus over 4 years, 5th year club option
@EdBouchette: Steelers also come to terms with 7th round pick Nicholas Williams, a DE. Leaves only QB Landry Jones left to sign.

Definitely good news (although some will be bent to disagree with me).

Very good having the top 4 picks signed already.

We get Landry Jones and Nick Williams on board and we'll ready to roll. Let's play ball.

I want Landry to get all the reps he can get. So he can get used to big time football. I like his potential.
The Steeler way...is the only way.

Is Jones the only one that got a club option 5th year? I haven't followed the signings too closely but they're usually all four years.

All first round picks get the 5th year option... it will be interesting to see how many teams excercise it in the coming years. The 5th year option must be exercised after the THIRD year. And the 5th year option is the average salary of the top players at the position.

1st-10th pick = option equals average salary of the top 10 salaries at the position
11th-32nd pick = option equals the average salary of the 3rd to 25th salaries at the position

Basically, top 10 picks need to prove their worth by the 3rd year

So thats this year for the first crop of rookie cappers?

Cam, Miller, Dareus, Green, Peterson Jones, Aldon, Tyron, Watt, Wilkerson, Pouncey, Quinn will all either sign mega extensions or have the 5th year exercised

Gabbert, Luiget, Watkins, Carpenter, Baldwin, Sherrod might not even have a job after next year

After those id imagine year 3 is going to be a big year to make or break....locker, ponder, fairly, Amukamara, Castonzo, Ingram, Carimi, Heyward....ect

it will definitely be interesting... free agency will start to look different in a few years, with younger talent hitting the market sooner
