    Steelers Could Trade Down.

There is talk that the Steelers would be better off trading down to help fill needs. I would offer S.F. the 17th for there 31 st and 34th and try to also have them shoe in a 4th or 5th. If they didn't want to bite, drop off the late additional pick. Any thoughts on that scenario?

Good idea on paper but this is a deep draft with little elite talent at the top. The 17th pick is not THAT different than the 30th pick. You can get the same type of talent. Thus, it may be a little more difficult to find a dancing partner for a trade back scenario.

I agree, a quantity vs quality argument could be made if you traded down for multiple 3rds and beyond, but in draft such as this one a player you hoped to pick at 17 could still fall to 31, and if thats not the case you'll have a player with a very similar talent level. As you said the top end talent isn't as high, however it's very deep and guys in the 20-40 range are all comparable. To have 2 picks in the low 30's plus a second round pick could give us 3 guys that could contribute right away rather than 2. If a 17 for 31 +34 was on the table I would definitely pull the trigger

That's too much in return for our pick. According to the draft pick value chart (see link below) the 17th pick is rated at 950 points. The 31st and the 34th are rated at 600 and 560 respectively (1160 total.) We'd need to give them another pick (our third round pick would be valued at 185 points) to even it out.

    Steelers 1 and 3 = 950 + 185 = 1135
    Niners 1 and 2 = 600 + 560 = 1160

A lot of the so called experts feel that this draft has a lot of good players but not many super stars. John Elway said ""The draft this year is not top-heavy," Elway told The Denver Post's Mike Klis. "So we feel like we can get as good a player at No. 28 as we could at 10". So there's good quality to be had at 31/34; the problem is that's it's way too much in return for our pick (and San Fran would likely be interested in moving out of this year entirely and not move up in this draft.)

But that crap doesn't matter, it's how bad does SF want to move up.
