That's what it was all about back then, the passion for the game. It's not like they made a ton of money doing it either but they played because they had a committment to the game and their teammates to go 100% every play and the passion was so evident for these guys on the field. When they say they wanted to hurt you, they meant it !

Not that being passionate means you are out to hurt anyone necessarily but back then the mindset for the game was alot different than today.

Butkus was all those things, I'm sure--but he weighed 245, Jack only weighed around 200. Close to a 50 lb difference, and that kind of weight can make a huge difference when it comes to imposing your will over someone.

I think for Jack's size, he did amazing things. I just don't expect someone as wiry as he was to do the things he did, and THAT makes him better in my opinion. It SHOULD have come easier for Butkus--he had the size, Jack didn't, so that makes him tougher in my opinion. For a guy to be so "small" and not be afraid to go up against the biggest of them, and play like he did? Now THAT takes guts.

"They say that when you're the champs, everybody will try to beat you. Well, I'm glad we're the champs, so bring 'em on, bring 'em all on. If we die, we ain't gonna die running. It's gonna be a fight."

Lambert and Hamm were by far the best middle and outside linebackers to ever play the game. LT was a junky, and needed drugs to perform at that level.

Jack's biggest contribution to the Steelers that many people don't stop to think about is the fact that his disposition, his style, his attitude ... is what personified Stiller football for the generations to come. Believe it or not, ex-Stillers like Jack Lambers, Levon Kirkland, Kevin Green, and Greg Lloyd are recruiting tools.

Younger LB's coming into the game today watch old clips of Jack and Greg Lloyd and want to carry on that type of intimidating attitude. Younger LB's want to come to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers because

    1) the fans revere fierce LB's

    and

    2) their system gives them the opportunity to be a bad ***.
