    Re: Rookies who could start

This is from Jim Wexell explaining the differences and it should help explain.

The buck linebacker in the Steelers' defense is more like the mike - or middle - linebacker. That position holds responsibility for defensive play calls, alignment and communication on the field. As far as between the whistle, the buck is commonly the player filling gaps against the run, along with short middle zone pass coverage. The mack linebacker is more of a scrape-and pursue defender (partially resembling the role of a will linebacker in a 4-3 defense). He's responsible for the outside edge, and takes a wider angle to get outside the box and contain the run. A mack doesn't need to have that same downhill attacking style of the buck, and is commonly more athletic.

    Rookies who could start

Farrior was the Mack and made all the play calls and alignments.

If Timmons isn't making the calls this year I'll be shocked.

Farrior was the buck. research it. Wexell calls him the Buck, Bouchette calls him the buck, CBS sports calls him the buck, the blogger we cant talk about on this site calls him the buck. Google search it. You have them backwards in name.

Sorry but you are wrong. And anyone who informed you is either wring or you misunderstood them. In couchette's case its probably just related to him being a moron.
    During the super bowl years:
Foote was always been the buck
    Farrior was always the Mack

Farrior played buck for some of his last 2 seasons

I am sure coach Butler knows more than you

    http://www.steelers.com/news/article...7-5d69eda3e6cc

Are the days of Levon Kirkland playing the buck long gone? He seems pretty small?

I wouldn’t say that. This guy is smaller than Levon Kirkland. Sean is a very instinctive, fast, quick kid that is very smart. He is probably best served if we can cover him up. What I mean by that is; if you look at James Farrior, he played the last four or five years at 230 pounds and when you get older like that, it’s best to be playing at 230 pounds as opposed to 235 pounds because he knows the game well enough that he is going to act fast enough and he can use the techniques and knowledge of the game, he doesn’t have to be as heavy. It’s better for him so he can keep his mobility, because that’s more important than anything else. This guy has that mobility.

Butler reiterated that on draft day after the Steelers had selected Spence in the third round.

At 5-11 3/8, 231 pounds, Spence wouldn’t compete to replace James Farrior because “the buck linebacker has to be a little bit bigger and take on the guards more,” Butler said, adding that Spence will have to play special teams because “he’s not going to start at mack linebacker over Lawrence Timmons. That isn’t going to happen.”

    as I pointed out...

Farrior moved to Buck only after Foote left, and they experimented with Timmons there.

they are referring to replacing Farrior at the Buck, simply because he played his last season there after Timmons became a regular at the Mack.

The vast majority of Farrior's career in Pittsburgh was at the Mack

    Do you watch the games?
Can you tell the difference between the Mack and Buck on the field?

Do you really think Farrior led the team in tackles 6 times from the Buck? LOL

Here's an article during Farrior's last season as he was phased out of 3rd downs...

Farrior, as the "mack" linebacker, hardly ever came off the field. He played on running downs, passing downs, everything but punting downs. He led the team in tackles six times and was second twice over the past eight seasons.
