Tomlin Press Conference Tuesday: Harrison, Polamalu, Mendenhall not listed on injury report

Don't bank on any of these guys being full strength but perhaps they can at least get some reps in. There's no way that Mendy or Harrison especially will be out there the entire game without being spelled by their respective backups.

Polamalu, his injury probably worries me more than any because those calf injuries are tough. If you overdue it too quickly you can pull it to the point where you are out for a month or more. If you tear it then you're really in trouble.

For the first time since training camp began, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ injury list doesn’t contain any Pro Bowl players.

Coach Mike Tomlin listed only right tackle Marcus Gilbert (groin) during his news conference Tuesday, omitting linebacker James Harrison (knee), safety Troy Polamalu (calf) and running back Rashard Mendenhall (knee). Neither Harrison nor Mendenhall has played since last season.

While Tomlin didn’t say all three would play Sunday against the Eagles – they still must get though a week of practice – he did sound optimistic that the Steelers would be virtually intact for the first time since the middle of last season. They played much of the second half of last season without injured outside linebackers Harrison (eye) and LaMarr Woodley (hamstring).

Harrison had knee surgery in mid-August, and has gone though only three full practices since camp began July 25. He went through a full practice last Tuesday, but the knee acted up and he couldn’t go on Wednesday. Harrison returned to practice Monday, and Tomlin said his five-time Pro Bowl linebacker has had some “intense workouts.” Polamalu injured his right calf in the opener against Denver and hasn’t played since. He was bothered with the same injury late last season. He said Monday that the calf felt better.

Mendenhall, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher, tore an ACL in the final regular season game in January and missed training camp. He has practiced regularly since the season started, but the Steelers have been careful not to rush him back.

Offensive coordinator Todd Haley said recently that Mendenhall wouldn’t be overworked once he returns, even though the Steelers running game is ranked 31st in the league.

Pittsburgh began camp with six players on the physically unable to perform list and, until now, have had multiple names on the injury list every week.

They asked Tomlin about needing to win this game Sunday against the Eagles to avoid falling back farther in the division behind 2 teams in Baltimore and Cincinnati and he kind of blew it off and made it like it was no big deal. I sure hope this isnt his mentality because while it's still early only 4 games into the season the Steelers absolutely cannot afford to fall 2.5 games behind both the Ravens and the Bengals barely a month into the season. So Tomlin had better feel some urgency and some pressure to win this game because with the Ravens probably going to beat the Chiefs and the Bengals probably going to beat Miami and both going to 4-1 if you lose Sunday and fall to 1-3 you are in huge huge trouble and are going to start to dig yourself a hole you might not be able to dig out of...

Tomlin and Le Beau are on thin, thin ice with me.
The Steeler way...is the only way.
