Question Woodley dropping back in coverage too much?

Saw a tweet the other day from one of the local Steelers media, can't remember which one off the top of my head but it talked about how the Steelers were dropping Lamarr Woodley in coverage much more than we might have anticipated.

It basically said that up until the last minutes of the game, Woodley had only actually rushed Peyton Manning 4 times and the rest he was dropping back in coverage. The last 10 minutes he did rush him 6 more times for a total of 10.

Seems to me that if Harrison is out and Woodley is your best pass rusher then you might want to actually put him in situations where he can rush more. I get that Worilds and Carter are coming back from injury and inexperienced respectively but man you aren't going to get sacks by keeping your best guy in coverage all day long.

That's one reason why the stats Woodley and Harrison put up year after year are so impressive. They drop back into coverage more than any other 3-4 OLBs in the league, yet they still put up double digit sacks every year. Yes, DeMarcus Ware is great, but I guarantee you that if he dropped into coverage half as much as Harrison and Woodley, the man wouldn't sniff the sack numbers he puts up.

Yeah I was noticing that during the game and I'm not a huge fan. Especially with Harrison out, someone needs to consistently be challenging the offensive linemen and putting pressure on the QB. I think Woodley is that only linebacker right now that can do that.

I'm all for dropping back into coverage when you have both on the field because you still have the other who is an elite pass rusher, giving them a good chance to get after the QB.

I don't particularly like it when one is out because all but give away any legitimate chance to get a sack or pressure.

They can talk about the standard is the standard all they want but it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that putting Worilds in the same position as Harrison isn't going to yield the same results.

They need to float Woodley around from end to end as well as having Troy press
the line too more often. Confuse the QB more and make the O line jittery not knowing
who's coming from where. They moved Troy up at times against Peyton and he didn't
like seeing that at all. I think he even called time out on one of those downs.
Woodley needs to bring the heat, hopefully LeBeau see's this too and utilizes that.
