Cool Tomlin Tuesday: Press Conference Highlights

Time again for the Tomlin Tuesday segments here on SA. The weekly pressers are held on Tuesday's at noon each week (sometimes a different day based on the most recent or upcoming game).

A few highlights from his talk today with the media:

-He didn't rule out Harrison or Worilds from playing in Denver, said they'll see how the week goes. He also said Harrison is doing everything possible to be ready. Worilds said previously that he's encouraged by his progress and is hoping to play regularly again soon.

-Sylvester will not play this week.

-Casey Hampton has participated more than most of the guys who were on the PUP, so he's in a different situation than guys like Harrison and Worilds. From what I saw of Casey he looked pretty much like he always does, holding his ground and seemingly able to put full weight on his knee.

-Wallace has been working hard and he's showing good progress in camp. Tomlin said he's been looking in pretty good physical shape but cautioned that it will take time to get back into football shape. He did not rule out him starting this week in Denver but did not commit to it either. (normal Tomlin speak for just about any position).

-Mendenhall has not been ruled out either, and he's looked great in practice this week so far.

-Ryan Clark will not play of course. He talked about both Mundy and Will Allen needing to step up in this game. Clark can do a lot of things, a great "center fielder" for the defense in terms of communication and performance.

-Also mentioned that Clark started the Ryan Clark’s Cure League in partnership with UPMC, the University of Pittsburgh’s Vascular Medicine Institute, and the Institute for Transfusion Medicine.
This initiative aims to raise awareness, donations and support that will enable Pitt research to drive better care and ultimately find a cure for his his sickle cell trait blood disorder.

-Did not say if Redman or Dwyer would start, said it will depend on how Redman's ankle progresses this week.

-Rainey will be the return man, but Tomlin cautioned that he's been given that opportunity but there are veteran, experienced, guys waiting if need be. Rainey is still a rookie after all.

-He talked up Denver as if they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Something he usually does each week; if you didn't know any better you'd think the Steelers don't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning.

-He mentioned how familiar the Denver offense is to Indy, and that he didn't expect anything less. Peyton is Peyton.

I also read that Mendenhall looked great today. I know be probably isn't ready for contact yet, but this gets me slightly aroused lol. If he comes back truly healthy in the next couple weeks, I can see him tearin up the league in this new offense. Hell, hopefully the injury lets us sign him to a modest contract extension in the offseason, obviously less than he wouldve gotten had he not been hurt. Blessing in disguise? Lol I hope. Ive always been a Mendenhall fan, and it would make me extremely happy to see him stay here and continue to produce.

Oh and I'll guarantee one thing. Rainey will take the return job and never look back. I honestly believe that he has the potential to be one of the best return men in this game if he stays healthy. I've never been as excited about a 5th round pick the moment we picked him, as I am with Rainey.

    Tomlin Tuesday: Press Conference Highlights

Rashard Mendenhall 'incredible' at Steelers practice

    By Marc Sessler

Published: September 04, 2012 at 12:06 PM ET

Modified: September 04, 2012 at 1:50 PM ET

It wasn't long ago that Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall was viewed as a shoe-in to start the regular season on the outside looking in. General manager Kevin Colbert talked openly about Mendenhall landing on the reserve/PUP list for the first six weeks of the season following anterior cruciate ligament surgery just eight months ago.

Then came a series of surprising events: First, Mendenhall was activated in mid-August, just days after Colbert predicted his imminent shelving. Then on Monday -- ditching his red, don't-touch-me jersey -- Mendenhall took regular snaps with the starters at practice , drawing high praise from teammates.

"He looked incredible," Brett Keisel told Jim Wexell of Scout.com .

"I thought he looked great," said Lawrence Timmons . "He was running well, finishing runs. I'm excited for him."

Coach Mike Tomlin is even toying with the idea of starting Mendenhall over Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer in Sunday night's season opener against the Denver Broncos , according to the site.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette told WTZN-FM that he doesn't expect Mendenhall to play and called his return to practice nothing more than Tomlin pulling levers to get the Broncos "thinking a little bit."

We'd be surprised if Mendenhall saw the field, but we've been surprised by his progress all summer, so we won't count him out. Neither, of course, will Denver.
