Arians: Playing the Browns defense is a good warmup for Broncos defense

Trolling around the internet this afternoon I was reading an article from Bruce Arians' weekly press conference with the Steelers media. He mentioned this during his talk, about how the Browns are one of the best in utilizing the 5 yd. cushion to beat up receivers. The Broncos also do this very well too he said. Link

Have you faced a lot of teams that press, man-coverage like the Broncos:

“Oh, yeah, many many. The Browns are probably the best at it. And the Browns do a great job of holding and grabbing and pulling on receivers within the five-yard frame. They were a really great warm up for these guys we’re going to play.”

How important is it for your receivers to be able to beat that?

“If we can’t beat it we won’t win.”

Does press-man take out or make harder the screen game for your receivers?

“It does. It takes it out some. They don’t play it all the time. They mix it in and out, but that part of it there are other answer to that too. We’ll use what we have to to get the ball out to those guys.”

Can you remember a year when you’d dealt with all this injuries?

“Close to it last year. Last year was more IR guys. This year it’s week-to-week, day-to-day who can and who can’t. You just go with the flow, man, you just take what’s there and go with it.”

So this may be a week where you don't see as many screen plays to the wide receivers as you normally would. If the Steelers can burn the Broncos early on some passes they'll back off of the man to man and play more zone to get help from the Safeties. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Remember, BA attacks the opposing defense's strengths. Not their weakness, but their strengths.

Well, this game is starting to play out where Ben and Arians need to pull something out of the surprise bag...

Maybe Dixon should start, that would surprise them, our offense would go from 2mph on the ground to 20mph..

I like Redman running the ball in this game a lot better then having Mendy to tell you the truth. I think he has a big game. If the Steelers can jump on Denver early and get up by 10 or more points it will completely force Tim Tebow to beat the Steelers throwing the ball which he will not be able to do single handily...

which means we'll see ben go deep to wallace at least once every drive...usually on 2nd and 10 to set up the 3rd and long situation. couple that with that it may snow in denver...i'm seeing at least 10 deep balls.

arians couldn't coach rosie o'donnell to overeat!
"Today, I'm officially retiring a Pittsburgh Steeler. And as much as I will miss football, my teammates, coaches and everything about the game, I don't want to play it in any other uniform. The black and gold runs deep in me, and I will remain a Steeler for life."--Hines Ward

Not really sold on the recent offensive strategy of run, checkdown, throw to AB. Steelers need to stay out of 3rd and long, and for the love of Mary, will the Steelers please start using their TE's?

WOuldn't mind seeing some kind of "wildcat" just to f*ck with Denver even more.
