Much maligned Steelers secondary still ranks high

Don't look now, but the Steelers have the 4th ranked pass defense in the NFL

Ok yeah, I know it's only heading into week 3 but atleast we have something to smile about with the much maligned Steelers pass defense.

    Week 1 - Joe Flacco - 17/29 224 yds. 3 TD's
    Week 2 - Tavarius Jackson - 20-29 159 yds. 0 TD's

Interestingly enough for those that don't remember, the Steelers pass defense finished:

12th overall in 2010 for Pass Defense.
    5th overall in 2010 for interceptions (21)
1st in Points allowed in 2010, average of 14.5 ppg

Just something to chew on as we often discuss the secondary when it comes to defense. Yes we know that pass defense includes more than just the 4 guys in the back, but normally when you think about stopping the pass you automatically focus on the DB's.

Its not so much how we do as a team defense because our DB success is predicated on pressure. It would be nice to see a coverage sack once in a while. Too many times we play zone behind the blitz. I'd love to see our other dbs in Man to man coverage and stop somebody besides Taylor. Normally they run free. Thus we play zone and get killed by the quick throwing teams.

I really think that the secondary is much better as long as we keep B'Mac on the bench let t6he youngsters compete for time it makes them try harder

Not looking too far into this stat. We played against Tavaris Jackson last week.

Really? You think Keenan Lewis did an outstanding job against the Seahawks? He was awful. Looked like a future Willie Gay out there.

I think he did a great job considering the amount of game experience. go to nfl.com and watch the arizona highlights it shows patrick peterson being torched play after play and he probably has more game time than Lewis I'll take Lewis or brown over B mac anyday

You do? I didn't see him do one positive thing when he was on the field. Besides "stop the big play." And it isn't too hard to play 10 yards off the receiver and then tackle him as soon as he catches the ball. I wasn't focusing on him the entire game, but whenever he was shown I just didn't see him doing anything good.

Steelers defense bends but often does not break. They rely on pressure and making the opposing QB make mistakes (errant pass, sack, fumble, INT). Steelers did a good job of getting off the field on 3rd down last year and last week, but this was Seattle.

Problem is good QB's exploit the secondary's inability to play man coverage, especially between the hashes.

They should be fine until Oct.30th when they will drop like a rock.

Really they are ok except against the top 4 or 5 QB's. Which hurts come Jan & Feb.
