The Ravens did what the Packers did and what the Patriots have been doing to us for years. The way to beat the 34 is to spread them out, hit multiple targets, use quick drops, and short to intermediate passes. You do that and then you open up the game downfield, which is exactly what happened today.
It's nothing new, it's not like the Steelers shouldn't have seen this coming. They absolutely should have. The 34 defense is great, no doubt, but it's not unbeatable..especially when the players aren't getting any pass rush and the secondary can't cover.
Let's not kid ourselves here and think the 34 is not effective anymore. The scheme is sound, yes, but it's not unbeatable. Teams have evolved their offenses now to beat these types of defenses, and Lebeau is going to have to find a way to adjust...as is the rest of the league that runs this defense.
Let's face it, when you're playing against Tavarius Jackson, it's one thing. When you play against Rogers or Brady, you have to be able to adjust your defense or atleast play at an elevated level.
That and the fact Ray Rice absolutely kills us every game.
We can't stop that midget to save our lives,sickening.
With the 3-4 for to work you've GOT to have a Pass Rush!

Actually the 34 defense does not need a pass rush, but a zone blitz scheme, which is what LeBeau uses, and you can use it with a base 4-3 defense, needs pass rush.
A zone defense is effective at first, but if the quarterback as time, the zones break down and receivers find holes to get open. The Ravens offensive line just did an outstanding job of picking up the blitz, it seemed everyone was always blocked.
The zone works if every portion of the defense (line, backers and DBs) works together. If you have a weakness, you will not be successful. When you don't pressure the QB and can't do man coverage, you will be exploited. The front seven need to kick it in gear or this will be a regular occurrence against good quarterbacks and west coast offenses.
Tomlin just said that its his plan to put in Foote for Farrior all year?? Didnt see that in the preseason?

Timmons with 12 tackles led the team, to bad they were all after his guy caught the ball

For quite a few plays though either Timmons or Harrison were dropping back to cover Ray Rice and weren't rushing. Not a good matchup either way. They needed to get safety help to cover Rice. Timmons/Harrison can not keep up with him.
