Arrow Steeler Nation is a blessed fan base

I haven't been paying much attention to football lately, but when I have, I've been thinking about the history of the Steelers since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, and when you categorize each season, then it really begins to illustrate just how successful the team has been during this period of time, and how fortunate we are as fans of the team. Allow me to illustrate...

    Super Bowl championships: 6
    1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, 2008.

    AFC championships: 8
    1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1995, 2005, 2008, 2010.

    AFC finalists: 15
    1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1984, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010.

    Division championships: 21
    1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2010.

    Playoff berths: 25
    1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010.

    Seasons with winning records: 30
    1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.

    Seasons without winning records: 11
    1970, 1971, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2006.

How many people can say that they cheer for a team that's been more likely to be a conference finalist than to finish with a record of .500 or worse since the AFL/NFL merger? The Steelers have made it at least as far as the AFC Championship Game 15 times, but have finished with a record of .500 or worse only 11 times. In other words, they've been one of the four best teams in the NFL more often than they've been average or mediocre.

This is exactly why I tell people that 10-6 is our 8-8, because the bar has been set so high since 1970. The Steelers have been dominant enough during this period of time that even in spite of them being a total laughingstock prior to 1970, only the Packers, Bears and Giants have more impressive bodies of work when you examine the entire history of the league. That's incredible.

Solid drafting of quality, character people with occasional slipups (plaxico, Santonio "wake n bake" Holmes)
coaching staff that puts out head coaches ( john fox, whisenhunt)
no wild fluctuations in front office personnel or in FA singings (TO, chad ocho stinko)

    winning begets winning

When you look at stats like that, it just affirms that the Rooney's have been "doin it right" for such a long time now. It's proof positive that when you stick to your values and morals when running a business, you can be successful. They don't waiver from what got them here no matter what the new "in" thing is for the NFL at any given time. Solid drafting, supplement with free agency, surround yourself with character guys first and football players second. Set a good example for the community, discipline when necessary no matter what their name is.

21 division championships since 1972, it still blows your mind!
