    Senior Bowl: Risers and Fallers

For 61 years now, the annual Senior Bowl has been a vital scouting tool for NFL teams. For the last 60 years, Mobile, Alabama has become the unofficial home of the NFL for this week. Each year we have players who help their draft stock during this week, and then there are those who hurt their stock. The Senior Bowl week is the first exposure these prospects have to NFL coaching and an NFL style practice week and game. It is a very good way to evaluate these prospects against the highest level of competition they have ever seen.

    Risers

    Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati

Gilyard came into Mobile underrated and overlooked by most in my opinion. Despite a solid career against quality opponents and a made for T.V. type of path to get where he now is, most had written Gilyard off. You often hear people go straight to talk about his size, his long speed, and the Brian Kelly "system." Gilyard did a lot to silence those critics a bit.

No he wasn't. This is why reading headlines isn't enough, you should read the attached article too.

There was an article somewhere, I saw it too. The Headline said he was arrested for pot. The reality is, it was an article that talked about how he was open with teams about getting arrested as a teen for pot possesion.

    Draft-hopeful Gilyard reveals marijuana arrest

Posted by Evan Silva on January 29, 2010 7:28 PM ET

University of Cincinnati wide receiver/return specialist Mardy Gilyard dominated the Big East to the tune of 87 catches for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior, adding three scores on punt and kickoff returns. He was named the conference's Special Teams Player of the Year and first-team All-Big East in both 2008 and 2009.

Gilyard is also not hiding his high school arrest during interviews at the Senior Bowl.

"Character's a big issue, so I tell them straight up," Gilyard said. "I was arrested in high school for possession of marijuana and attempt to distribute. I didn't have no problem telling (them) that." Gilyard blames the arrest on being "young and dumb," and says he isn't proud of his past misdeeds.

While off-field issues will remain a red flag to teams considering Gilyard in April's draft, his approach is admirable and smart. It also contrasts with that of Nebraska LB Cody Glenn last year. The Redskins' fifth-round pick, Glenn lied about the reasons for his senior-year suspension to get truth seekers off his back.

Gilyard has drawn mixed reviews for his play down in Mobile. A projected late first- to second-round pick entering the event, the fifth-year senior has struggled with drops after measuring an inch and a half shorter and eight pounds lighter than he was listed at UC.

He'll get a chance to make up for it in Saturday's game.

What are our chances of landing Dexter m^fin McCluster in the 3rd and Legarette Blount in the 5th?

i have had an XL man crush on Dexter McCluster since he scored 39 TD's as a senior in hsfb .. also followed the much lesser known Legarette Blount ...

crazy to think how the rest of the nation takes so many athletes out of FL ... who knows maybe we can scoop another FL boy to plug the middle -Terrence Cody !

I would say the chances of being able to get each of them in those rounds is possible. I could buy them wanting McCluster, but I'm not so sure they would have too much interest in Blount. They had a man crush of their own last year on Frank "the tank." They also have Isaac Redman on the shelf as their two "bigger" type backs. Moore will still be the 3rd down guy, and of course Mendenhall is "the guy." So they do need a #2 change of pace/specialty of some sort type of back. McCluster could be that guy. I've personally been targeting Joe McKnight as that guy in the 3rd. I like McKnight a little more because he more prototypical and probably a better runner from the RB position.

You are ready to declare the 2009 draft a complete bust! Hood is crap, Lewis and Burnett couldn't cover anyone, Summers won't be on an NFL roster in 2010 and neither will Urbik. I am willing to give them more than one season to see if they are a complete bust. Three years is a fair evaluation. I'm willing to concede that 2/3 of these players won't pan out, but I'm also not ready to give up on the entire draft.
