The Steelers have so little room under the salary cap, and have such a conservative philosophy to go with it, that free agency has come to mean a door that only opens outward as their own players flee the premises.
Last I heard before we were a good 15-18 mill under the cap but after the offer to Starks and the offers to our RFA's we're down pretty low right now. Last night on NFLN they mentioned were around only 2-3 million under the cap right now which is NOT much room. You can expect to see some contract negotiating and restructuring taking place in the next couple months leading up to the draft and shortly after to free up more room.
We generally don't have a ton of money to spend under the cap as it is but how is it that in a year where the cap number has gone up such a significant amount that we still have so little to spend? It's due to backloaded contracts and players due big money that have been in their deals for a few years years but still have time to go that haven't been restructured yet this year.
Looks like our penny pinching Steelers will have to work some cap magic yet again.
