    Nothing's guaranteed in NFL

PITTSBURGH — There will be no guarantees coming from any of the Steelers this week.

Not even free safety Anthony Smith will dare predict victory.

Smith learned a valuable lesson in humility on Sunday when he and the Steelers were trounced by the New England Patriots. In a game Smith guaranteed the Steelers would win, the red-hot Patriots rolled, 34-13.

This Sunday, the Steelers (9-4) return to Heinz Field and play another of the NFL’s better teams in the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4).

In a game that could preview a wild-card match-up in the AFC playoffs, both teams could clinch a playoff berth with a win.
“We’re just trying to win our 10th game,” Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said. “We’re not worrying about who’s behind us or who’s ahead of us and what seed (we might get). We’re just worried about the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

The Steelers, who lead the AFC North, should be worried about the Jaguars.

They have lost two straight to the Jaguars, 23-17 in overtime in Pittsburgh two years ago and 9-0 last year in Jacksonville.

Beyond that, Jacksonville seems to be peaking at the right time. They’ve won four of their last five games, including a 37-6 blowout over Carolina on Sunday. Their only loss in the past five weeks was a narrow 28-25 decision on the road against the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts (11-2).

“That’s a big, physical football team,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said of Jacksonville.

Offensively, the Jaguars are led by running back Fred Taylor, who’s tied for ninth in the NFL with 944 rushing yards, and quarterback David Garrard, whose 103.3 passer rating ranks second to only New England’s Tom Brady (123.5).

Defensively, the Jaguars are banged up. Defensive end Marcus Stroud was placed on the injured reserve list Monday with an ankle injury. Defensive end Reggie Hayward (groin) and middle linebacker Mike Peterson (broken hand) aren’t expected to play Sunday.

Still, the Jaguars have plenty of defensive firepower with tackle John Henderson and cornerback Rashean Mathis, who both played in the Pro Bowl last year.

“It’s all about getting back on the right track,” Ward said. “For us, it’s a home game. We’ve been playing pretty well at home.”

Yes, the Steelers do play well at home. They might only be 2-4 on the road, but they’re a perfect 7-0 at Heinz Field.

And when the Florida-based Jaguars show up Sunday, they’ll be greeted with typical chilly December temperatures on the North Shore.

“We’re pretty excited about that,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said of the weather forecast. “We’re down here in 80 degree weather this week. So it will be a nice change. We look forward to going up there and competing in those elements. That’s part of football.

“We pride ourselves in being the type of team that can play in any type of weather and any type of conditions.”

“It’s going to be a slugfest,” Garrard said. “We wouldn’t want it any other way.”

    1. We hold 3rd place and host the 6th seed
    2. The Brownies sneak in at the 6th and well play them at home in the AFCWCG
    3. The Jags will take the Chargers in the other WCG and have to travel to still undefeated NE
    4. The Jags knock them off !!!
