PITTSBURGH (AP) The Dawg Pound in Cleveland may not be a fan of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but the city's police dogs will be.
Roethlisberger's foundation is donating an explosion detection dog, a training course and a canine protection vest to the Cleveland Division of Police's canine unit.
Roethlisberger, who grew up in Findlay, Ohio, learned that Cleveland's only explosive detecting canine, Rex, is 11 years old and nearing retirement age. The department did not have the funds to purchase a new dog.

"Born and raised in the state of Ohio, I have always held the deepest respect for the efforts of our police and fire departments," said Roethlisberger, who has become friends with some state and local officers in Pittsburgh.
Roethlisberger often wears a Pennsylvania State Police ballcap in honor of his late friend, state police Cpl. Joseph Pokorny, who was slain while on duty in 2005.
Roethlisberger's foundation will distribute grants to the police and fire departments in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area and those of each Steelers regular season away opponent. The first such grant was given last year to Findlay's police department to replace its service dog.
The Steelers open the season Sunday in Cleveland, where the end zone fans have long been known as the Dawg Pound. Thanks Ben.

Being that I live here in this shiatty *** city. ( also know as the poorest in the nation.)
It's just sad that they decide to raise Clevelands taxes once again to 7.75% (start Oct. 1st) while everyone else in Ohio is still paying 6-6.5% taxes.:cursin:
IMO, If it wasn't for the sports teams in this City, Cleveland would be a Ghost town except for all the shootings that take place here.

It's a good move for Ben both from a hometown PR stand point but also from a just flat out generous and nice thing to do for the city.

I thought you could pick up a dog on any corner in Clownland - for little if any money. I mean, haven't you seen those (and I use the term loosely) women....lol :hilarious:

They need an explosive dog there - it smells like bombs are being dropped all the time....lol :haha:

But seriously - very cool of Ben :bigthumb:

Reading this puts a lump in my throat. It's hard not to comapre him to Micahel Vick and think about all the dogs that suffered for his sick entertainment. Quite a contrast between two young men with identical opportunities.

You're a good man, Ben Roethlisberger.

Even though I work for a relatively small city, our canine unit is invaluable, not only to us but neighboring areas that don't have one. They save lives and help keep our officers safer. Great move Ben!
