OK, the cuts are in:

Chidi is gone
Coc is staying
Reid can't hang onto the ball with any consistency
Kreidwalt is the only ST ace and he's not a return guy.

Our ST unit was suspect heading into this year and was downright terrible last year; now with the cuts in it appears that nothing has changed. Hopefully Amos Jones & Bob Ligashesky have something up their sleeve for this unit because it's not exactly an awe inspiring group of guys right now. Im thinking we'll see a lot of starters playing more than even we heard they would, atleast early on in the season.

I think Cary Davis and William Gay will help pretty nicely on ST. I always liked Chidi and am sad to see him go. Have fun in AZ.

:plus1: I agree and William Gay is a better option than Chidi if it comes down to him having to see the field on defense.
Reid will get his act together and become a natural on fielding punts like back in the FSU days.

Gay will be a big boost for the ST so yes that's a plus. I just like having a couple ST aces in the bag because the way our unit has been playing it's nothing to write home about.

We've got some young talent like Davis, Gay, and hopefully Reid settles down because he's got so much potential but the initial outlook for the ST unit appears to be one that will struggle early on and we'll have some growing pains to live through.

Boy I sure hope not.:crossfingers:

I think we will be fine on ST's. I'm more worried about the mascot making it thru the season.:bluelol:

Maybe he could be the wedge buster :lol:

Trust me, Im hoping these guys will come through for us and prove me wrong..LOL but there's an awful lot of youth on the ST and inexperience so the starters will probably play more than we might have wanted.

There is still some experience there from players of last year but Haynes was a very good ST, so was Chidi, we'll be loosing James Harrison off the ST unit full time because he'll be starting so while there is cause for optimism with all the young talent it's probably a safe assumption that they'll struggle some.

The trade with Atlanta for Allen Rossom in exchange for a conditional pick next year does not speak volumes for Coach Tomlins confidence in Willie Reid's abilities. Rossom is a cornerback/specialist 5' 8 178 lbs. He was also a 2005 pro-bowl special reams returner. I think its a smart move. Willie didn't quite live up to the billing and did not look confident back there.

Good catch man, thanks for posting that up. I agree it does speak volumes about the lack of confidence that Tomlin and company have in our return game. Im glad we've got a veteran in Rossom to help us and sure up that area. He'll be a good influence on Willie.

Does that put you at ease a little more about our special teams return game? It does me. Rossom is one of those little speed burners that will return a few for touchdowns this year.

Hell yes it does :yesnod: See the team heard my plea and look what happened :lol:

Really though, having a veteran like Rossom back there is such a relief. He's got the skill and talent to teach Reid what he needs to learn to really help us out and make the return game a weapon instead of a hindrance.

What really excites me about this move is that the Steelers FO is showing it will agressively pursue players who will give their new coach the best opportunity to make this a successful team. They saw a weakness and didn't just wait to see what was available on the waiver wire, they aggressively went out and made a trade to fill a need right now! I like that!

:clap:

Who is our back-up center? We cut Okobi and Philip.

T-Gun you can rest easy now that ST's has more options other than Reid and Coke.
Always remember Tomlin is on our side.:bigthumb:

I like picking up Rossum as well. I wish Tomlin could be confident in Willie Reid, but we can see why he is not. Nice move by Tomlin.

I think it was worth the pick, we get pretty good return guy. Plus it looks like Reid is a better receiver than punt returner. Now we have a certified returner.

Phillips is showing as being cut on steelers.com. Didn't Simmons take snaps at center in ota's and spring practice? :scratch:

I didn't see Philip being cut either, I must have missed it. I figured he'd be the backup Center.

Yes Simmons is the only other one that played some Center for us, correct ?

Excellent move! :tt02: Even though this is saying alot about their confidence in Reid.

Rossum is still a badass retun man and better than anything we've got! Considering how our draft picks have been panning out after round #4 each year ..... if we give up a 6th or 7th rounder for him .... this is a STEAL!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Additionally, today the Steelers traded a 2008 conditional draft pick to the Atlanta Falcons for return specialist/cornerback Allen Rossum. Rossum (5-8, 178), a 10-year veteran from Notre Dame, was originally drafted in the third round (85th overall) of the 1998 by the Philadelphia Eagles. He then was traded to the Green Bay Packers and spent two seasons (2000-01) with the team before signing with the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent on March 13, 2002.
Rossum, a 2005 Pro Bowl selection as a special teams returner, holds the Falcons record for career punt return yards (1,723), career kickoff return yards (5,489) and career punt returns for touchdowns (2).
When did we cut Philip? I know Okobi and Stephenson got the axe. :dunno:
The players released from the Steelers roster include WR Dallas Baker, TE Cody Boyd, OT Jason Capizzi, TE Jon Dekker, RB Verron Haynes, CB Chidi Iwuoma, CB Jovon Johnson, FB John Kuhn, S Mike Lorello, CB Anthony Madison, CB Grant Mason, DE Ryan McBean, DE Shaun Nua, C Chukky Okobi, DT Scott Paxson, C Marvin Philip, QB Bryan Randall, LB Ron Stanley, OG Cameron Stephenson, OT Brandon Torrey, WR Gerran Walker, LB Rian Wallace and WR Walter Young.
Not sure how accurate that list is but that was copied from the Steelers website off of NFL.com It is showing the Steelers cutting both of them. With Kendal Simmons starting at RG I guess the plan would be that if Mahan went down they could slide Simmons over and Kris Kemuatu could fill in at RG for Simmons. :scratch:
------------------------------------------------------------
[AutoMerged Post Below]
------------------------------------------------------------
Eason, a veteran journeyman, beat out McBean and Nua for the sixth spot on the defensive line, but the Steelers might consider acquiring Kimo von Oelhoffen. The former Steeler was released by the New York Jets this weekend.
The cutting of Okobi saves the team $2 million in cap space, but other factors were involved in his release, namely that he couldn’t block nose tackles, as evidenced by the one disastrous play against Carolina when the only nose tackle he faced this preseason drove him five yards into the backfield to tackle the running back.
The Steelers will begin assembling their practice squad after noon Sunday. Players with less than two years of accrued NFL experience are eligible, as long as the player was on the active roster for less than nine games of that season. Eligible players must also have been on NFL practice squads for less than three seasons, with three games (including bye weeks) constituting a season.
I hope we are able to sign Capizzi to the practice squad! :crossfingers:
I like this move. Rossum is a proven return guy. No worries about muffed kick returns at the 10 yard line or something. I love this move.
I thought the special teams have looked better this pre-season Top...Besides the return game the whole special teams looks improved...The kick coverage teams looked solid and Sep upgraded the punt game......Maybe I'm missing something?lol
As for the trade for Rossom...I love the move....He has been one of the better return men in the NFL the last few years......I still think Willie Reid has potential but I'm glad the Steelers are not just sitting back and waiting on potential......They needed a return man they have one now...Plus it will only cost a late round pick next year....Great move in my opinion...
There have been improvements with Sep being the biggest one and now adding Rossom that gives us a real viable weapon.
The coverage units are what worry me now, not so much the return game since we made this trade today. It's one thing to cover in preseason when everyone is just running around out there but when it gets right down to it in the regular season when ST becomes HUGE, having so many new faces on the coverage team just worries me some.
Something tells me the Steelers aren't quite done adjusting the roster yet. They may still add a player or two depending on cuts. I haven't seen the other team's cuts yet except for Byron Leftwich, which was a shocker in
itself.
There is a pretty good list at sci.com but it is a pay site so there is no point in posting the url. The only interesting name I see so far is Kimo was released from the Jets. Not sure how much Kimo has left in his tank but he would be a nice back-up IMO.
Its a valid point about the new faces on the coverage units...But even in years past in the pre-season we saw the Steelers kick coverage units sucks...:lol: So thats why I was encouraged by the signs of the kick coverage units getting better....Plus Tomlin said he would use starters on the kick coverage teams....Dude I think the special teams will be solid this year...Now with Rossum and if Reid continues to get better the Steelers return game will be as strong as ever...
Reid really has no excuse now, the dude has a pro bowl returner helping to show him the ropes of how to be a top notch returner. If you can't learn from a guy like that then you're hopeless :lol:
Rossum can flat out fly. A couple of years ago he won the NFL's Fastest Man Contest in Honolulu.
well maybe he can play long enough untill Willie Ried knows how to return the ball.
Is there any chance we can put him in a s a slot receiver?
For Bill, STs was like foreplay for a lot of men--he just didn't see the importance of it, and that it's a very necessary part of the game.
Mike realizes that if THAT isn't clicking, it greatly diminishes the rest of the game, and if not attended to, can even ruin what might otherwise be a win :bigthumb:
He's not really on the field much so his age shouldn't be much of a factor. Plus he just showed that he still had it about a week ago on a 57 yard return.
That's what always confused me about BC, the dude used to be a ST coach so you'd think he'd place high importance on it but it's almost he didn't care or if he did care it sure didn't show until everything was such a cluster that a change had to be made.
yeah were not asking him to be an every down runningback lol. and im sure were not paying him like one either, hes a ****** corner and a very fast return man that will/has been on the field very little his whole career, i hope hes not that worn down lol
Yeah personally I don't care if he can play corner or not, I just want him to return kicks and help out Reid in his career. We had Chidi on the team for a long time, he wasn't any good at CB but he was a hell of a ST ace.
