All:
I am a very recent newbie on the SA and will readily admit how happy I am to have found the site. I have been an Steeler fan since 1960, when my family moved to the Burgh from Chi-town. Lived there for the next 20 years. Here's some familiar names I recall in Pgh sports... (All time hero: Roberto Clemente), and Hoak, Grote,Clendenon, Maz,Burgess,Verdon,Stargel,Face, etc... football: brady keys, lipscomb, buddy dial, and the entire 70's crew.. etc...
My dad would take me to Pitt Stadium to watch games back in the old days. Heck, it was a "Summer camp" uphill walk work out just to get to the stadium from Forbes or 5th Ave. The stadium would hold 100,000, but we'd be lucky to get 20-30K for the games and my best rememberance was a 1964 hit on the then best quarterback in the league, YA Tittle of the NY football Giants, by Steeler defensive lineman "Big Daddy" Lipscomb, who crushed through the vaunted Giants offensive line to "CRUSH" Tittle's head to head helmet with his own. YA"s helmet was actually cracked and he fell to his knees in the endzone, helmet off and revealing a head crack that bled like scalp and skull wounds do. To give just feel for the moment, YA to this day is one of only 6 NFL QB's to go 3 straight years with 30 or more passing td's. ( pic of this is available on NY Giants site, it made cover of Sports Illustrated), )All 30K Pgh. fans went absoultely wild with the defensive play. I realized then, Pgh. didn't want the win as much as they wanted the tough defense and if we could hold out long enough, someday, we'd be able to put the two together .... 1969, enter Chuck Noll and as you all know ... the rest is history.
ps: This years version of the Steelers is potentially as good in a league comparison as the 70's black-n-gold were in their day. We have it all ..... can they put it together over 17 weeks. ......... yes, and they will ... per MIke Tomlin direction and fan exuberance!
So, there's a little about me, and my initial indoctrination in to the Steel Nation. I will absolutely be sticking around SA for more and will try to contribute as you guys do. I really look forward to being with fans, as sitting here amidst the Pat's people has it's drawbacks !
Thanks again, and see you soon ......
