• Steelers kicker Jeff Reed got back in the groove against Carolina. In the first quarter, Reed connected from 40 yards out. Four minutes before halftime, he made a 27-yarder to make it 6-0. A week ago against Philadelphia, Reed failed on field-goal attempts of 50 and 47 yards.

• Mike Barr did not gain ground in his battle to unseat veteran punter Chris Gardocki. Gardocki handled the bulk of the punts and was back in his usual role as Reed's holder. One of Reed's misses against Philly came on a shaky spot by Barr.

I was glad to see Jeff get back on track last night, he's been awesome for us and we'll continue to need him to be reliable this year.

Reed was really starting to concern me and I actually looked into his numbers heading into the Carolina game. All of his misses in preseason was from beyond 45 yards so I didn't try and think about it too much. It's a relief though seeing him finaly making a string of field goals just before the season starts... it's a good confidence builder.

Barr needs to work on his holding if he wants to make the team. I think Reed will be fine when it matters.
