NEW YORK (AP) -- Chicago Bears (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/chi/) linebacker Brian Urlacher (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5038/) was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league. NFL rules prohibit gear that advertises any product but a designated sponsor, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday.
Urlacher was fined for drinking vitaminwater and wearing a vitaminwater hat during the media session in Miami leading to the title game. Gatorade is the NFL's official drink.

McCarthy said this is the first time such a fine has been levied. He added that $100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl.
The fine recalls an episode involving Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon in the playoffs following the 1985 season, the previous time the Bears made the Super Bowl. McMahon wore a headband that said "adidas" in a playoff game against the New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/), and then-commissioner Pete Rozelle fined him $5,000 because the shoe company was not an NFL sponsor. The following week, in the NFC title game against the Los Angeles Rams, McMahon wore a headband that read "rozelle."

I'm sure vitaminwater will pay the fine because now they are getting the publicity they wanted with this article.

Thats the stupidiest thing ive ever heard , maybe the NFL should relize he doesnt like Gatorade or didnt want it at that time, what if he was drinking some regular water , would they still try to rape his pockets, Okay so what if he drank some vitamin water does that mean they have to fine him 100k I think they need to change the rule on that for sure.

Remember when Ben had PT on his shoes for Pat Tillman and the league had a fit and fell in it? I can understand guidelines, we need them, we need rules and blah , blah, blah, BUT the NFL has gone nuts. Sure, most of these fines are mere lunch money for these guys but it is the principal of the thing.

It's like a cop pulling you over because he doesn't like your hairstyle and wants to "fine" you for bad taste. An easy way for the town to get some money, eh?

The difference is, the NFL always deals in terms of THOUSANDS because their players are so ridiculously rich (over-paid IMO--there ARE easier jobs they could work toward if they don't want to get hurt and still want to make great money...doctor, lawyer, stock broker, CEO, etc....).

Anyway, back on track...it sounds to me like an easy way for the league to line their pockets in someone else's money, and off someone else's work.

The rules are gettin a LITTTTLE ridiculous. When it's a rule in place just to make you easy money, there's somethin wrong with that rule.

I agree with your post, steelerwoman. This is getting out of hand and going too far.
