SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Linebacker Colby Bockwoldt signed with the San Francisco 49ers today.

Bockwoldt played mostly on special teams for Tennessee last season after two years with the New Orleans Saints, starting 16 games in 2005.
The Titans and the Pittsburgh Steelers also hoped to sign him, but Bockwoldt chose to reunite with 49ers special teams coordinator Al Everest, his coach in New Orleans for two years. Bockwoldt is the fifth free-agent defensive player to join the 49ers in March, along with cornerback Nate Clements, safety Michael Lewis, defensive lineman Aubrayo Franklin and linebacker Tully Banta-Cain. Another FA not coming to Pittsburgh

Those 49ers are really stockpiling the talent and throwing the money around this year.

C'mon, if we draft a stud DE/OLB like everybody thinks we will, we won't need another mediocre (picked in the late rounds) role playing linebacker. We already have some linebackers on our roster who will never be starters, Clint Kriewaldt and Rian Wallace. Why do we need more of these types of players?
At this point aren't we just drafting for depth even at linebacker? With James Harrison filling Porters spot, and the other 3 guys returning whoever we draft will more than likely ride the pine and play special teams. Don't see where this guy Colby Bockwoldt would've helped us anyway. I expect at least 2 picks at LB in this draft. Probably the first and then another possibly on day 2. We have 9 picks in this years draft. There is no way that all 9 players could make our roster on opening day. That would mean that we replaced 17% of our roster from last year.....thats not happening. I expect our FO to do some maneuvering on draft day and utilize the freedom these extra picks give us (with our picks, not the supplemental picks). Anyway, good for the 49ers. Hope they fill up their 53 man roster with special teams quality players.
