The Steelers have picked up their 2015 option on Cameron Heyward, tweets Albert Breer of the NFL Network. Itís the latest in a string of fifth-year options for 2011 first-rounders that will be exercised in advance of the May 3 deadline.

Heyward, the 31st overall pick in the 2011 draft, became a starter for the first-time last season, appearing in 845 total defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. The 24-year-old recorded a career-best 59 tackles and five sacks, as well as recovering his first career fumble.

The Steelers defensive end will be in line for a salary of $6.969MM for 2015. At this point, that money is guaranteed for injury only, though itíll become fully guaranteed on the first day of the 2015 league year. Heyward will be eligible for unrestricted free agency following the í15 season.

Just spotted this

Wanna correct something -- communication error here. Cam Jordan, not Cam Heyward, had his option picked up. My mistake.

Yep, so they haven't yet picked it up. They will though. They'll exercise the option and most likely extend him next offseason

I'd extend him this offseason to avoid having to pay him even more next year after he beasts out this season.

Its done!!

The NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement contains a provision to allow teams to exercise a fifth-year option on players picked in the first round starting with the 2011 draft, and the Steelers have elected to do just that with Cam Heyward.

Heyward is such a beast and hes one that no one knows about, Guys like JJ Watt and Mo Wilkerson get all the attention, but heyward broke out in a big way last season, hes going to be a cog in the defense the way aaron smith was. Totally dominant, but relatively quiet

So to finalize a great DL, the Steelers will pick Hageman #15

Ive soured a bit on Hageman....looks dominant sometimes and lazy the rest of the time. He reminds me a lot of Kentwaan Balmer, wouldnt be upset with the pick though hes just a tough evaluation. Nix or Tuitt in 2 would be perfect, Stinson or Urban later would be great too

You forgot, he plays too high also.

I can't see Nix being there for us in the 2nd round. I wish, but I can't see it.

With the number of teams employing 3-4 defences these days I believe neither of those guys will still be around in the mid 40's slot.

Dick needs to come up with another style defense that uses another special selection of defensive players... we had dibs on these 3-4 guys for years with limited competition... we need a new secret scheme and we need to start drafting what other teams ignore to fit our new D .. come'on DL before you retire.... a 1-6 a 2-5 a 5-2 a 6-1 lol

that's what Seattle did... they just did it in the secondary.
