View Full Version : Hall game perk: more practice for Steelers

The Steelers and new coach Mike Tomlin will get plenty of extra practice time with which to get acquainted this season.

The announcement that the Steelers and New Orleans Saints will open the NFL preseason Aug. 5 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, means more than just an additional preseason game for both teams.

It also means the Steelers will be allowed to open training camp a week earlier than usual. The Steelers have not officially identified their first day of training camp in Latrobe, but NFL rules allow the team to open camp two weeks before its first preseason game.

That means they likely will report to St. Vincent College the weekend of July 20-22, rather than July 27-29. The Steelers have not participated in the Hall of Fame game since they opened the preseason against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1999.

In addition, because of Tomlin, the Steelers are allowed to hold an extra minicamp this year. League rules allow teams with a new head coach an extra offseason minicamp.

Tomlin has not set a date for the minicamp, either.

Im sure the players will just LOVE reporting to camp a week earlier than usual. As if it's not hot enough by the end of july as it is

Seriously though this whole extra preseason game is just scarey. 4 games is enough as it is risking injury to starters, so now we add one more yet ! :banging:

With the new coaching staff 1 more week should be very helpful.....

The extra week of practice is about the only positive that is coming from this HOF game... I don't mind the extra preseason game I think the coaches will yank the starters relatively quick in the first couple of games to avoid any injuries, but the extra time is all good especially with all the new coaches... it's a blessing in disguise :)

The extra practices are going to be helpful, as is the extra mini camp, but I hate having 4 preseason games, let alone 5.

but I hate having 4 preseason games, let alone 5.

Thats the only drawback to getting that extra week, I figure by the 3rd week Tomlin and crew will have a good idea of who everyone is and what they can and can't do.

Our starters hardly saw any play time last preseason and it shown in the first part of the regular season.
Lets hope Tomlin lets the first team see alot more of the field in the last two games since we have an extra one to see what the rooks and the 2nd and 3rd teamers can do.

I knew we we're gonna start out flat last preseason when our 1st team maybe saw 6 series all preseason.
The only way a team can mesh together is to practice in live game situations and thats what preseason is about aside from evaluating the young talent for roster spots.
