Steelers agreed to terms with TE Matt Spaeth, formerly of the Bears. Spaeth will fill the blocking tight end role vacated by free agent Leonard Pope. He was just released by the Bears earlier in the week.

Not the best signing, but nt the worst ether. Sure the stoen hands comments are true, but hes more of a blocker anyways. Heath might not be Heath till a quarter of the way through the season so I could see why they did this. Maybe we will see a little more Paulson? (Im not giving up on him. not yet)

I like the signing because he's a good blocker and his hands aren't terrible lol. I really think Paulson might be our future tight end because alot of times this year I would think it was Heath who made the catch and it was Paulson. They look alot alike, and he has shown he can catch well.

This is a disaster signing, he's terrible!

A strong run blocker — he was the best in the league at his position in this category per Pro Football Focus in 2012 — Spaeth improves the Steelers’ tight end depth. Heath Miller, one of the AFC’s top all-around tight ends, is recovering from multiple torn knee ligaments suffered last December, including an ACL.

He actually graded out as the best blocking TE in the NFL last year

I put a lot of stock in PFF. They are one of the few resources that I measure my own opinion against.

I guess that means they won't be signing Davis.

Spaeth had just six receptions for 28 yards in Chicago last season, serving mainly as a blocker.

Hello, first time user but long time reader anyways, can anyone please explain to me as to why we bring back guys that we released or left. I don't understand. The only one that I feel will work out will be Plax. I think this upcoming season he is going to be a huge redzone threat which is where we lack in production. I get so pissed when we drive the ball so well and than come out with only a field goal. But bringing back Spaeth and Gay not my favorite re-signings in the world. I mean maybe they know something we don't know. Anyways look forward to talking about Steeler Football!

We need a good blocking TE to help these young tackles.

As do I. They clearly put the time in.

For cryin' out loud! Re-treads, nothing but re-treads. Can they please stop with these "B" rate signings? Yes, Spaeth was a good blocker, but not much of a receiving threat.

Call me crazy, but I am not signing anyone until I know for sure I have locked up Sanders for a few years.

Horrible.

Not "horrible." A perfectly acceptable, boring, and typical Steeler FA signing. There is nothing "horrible" about a cheap backup TE who is an excellent blocker. They did not sign him to be Heath.

I will really try not to hate too much till i see the product put on the field nxt season.

What confuses is me is all that talk by colbert of making big changes and not signing neone after the final game of the yr.
I know some guys would have to be signed but common.

As decent as some of these deals are for vet minimum colbert should have said ill let all the young potential go and sign old vets and prior castoffs...

Regardless of these signings if we dont have a great draft well be hurting nxt yr...

They sign a dude that caught 6 passes last season which is a huge slap in the face to Ben and the passing game. The only way this team will be able to move the ball down field is when they punt it back to the opponent.

Matt Spaeth is horrible. There's no other way to put it. His blocking is debatable as well...there's a reason he's not in Chicago...lol.

His blocking is debatable? He graded out as the best blocking TE in the league last season. I'd be willing to bet that you honestly didn't watch a single snap of his last season. Everyone is bitching about the pickup solely because he wasn't very good here. He's not Heath Miller and they didn't bring him in to be. They brought him in because, believe it or not, he's a very good blocking TE. It's a good pick up but people are going to bitch because he's another ex player we cut and it isn't a sexy signing. Let's not forget the fact that 1) he's not a lock to make the team and 2) he's being brought in to replace Pope as the 3rd TE if he does make the team, and believe it or not, he's an upgrade.
