View Full Version : JaMarcus Russell as back up?

01-23-2013, 12:09 PM

Former 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell is training for an NFL comeback.

We'll wait until you stop laughing ...

The former Oakland Raiders quarterback, who hasn't taken a single NFL snap since 2009, told Yahoo! Sports he's dropped from 320 pounds to 308 pounds and is ready to bury past criticisms.

"The last few years, the things going through my life, football is my job and it is how it feeds my family," he said. "People would say (that) I didn't love the game but that pisses me off. People don't know the real you but I want people to know the real me and see what I can do. People are always saying that I'm a bust. I want show them I'm not. I'm committed to this now."

According to the report, Russell will work out with a bevy of former NFL players, including NFL Network's Marshall Faulk, ex-quarterback Jeff Garcia and former Olympic track star Ato Boldon.

The 27-year-old hasn't sniffed the NFL since getting tryouts with the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins in 2010, after he was arrested for possessing codeine syrup without a prescription. But he says he's ready to change the perception.

"I'm not looking for a pat on the shoulder from people who haven't been there for me," Russell said. "It feels funny not to go through a training camp, that's just what I'm used to. It's going to feel good to go back out there again. I will make this happen."

His biggest challenge will be to convince a team to give him a chance.

Would you even give him a chance? He's CAN'T be looking for a starting job, and may come cheap as a back up QB. I strongly lean towards no, but that's mostly because of his past. A workout wouldn't hurt I suppose, maybe he really is trying to change. Who know. What would you do?

he throws one of the most beautiful passes and has a huge arm....but his drug problems will stop the steelers from even looking

A workout wouldn't hurt.

He is still young at 27, at least for another 3 years or so.

It's a shame he couldn't perform in Oakland but he wasn't exactly in the best position and probably played on all his hype from LSU.

He does, i always thought a east coast system would fit his talents better anyways,it would be nice, but like K said if the Steeler don't feel good about where he is in his drug problems they won't waste there time...

also, hes 308 down from 320....he needs to be around 265 to be taken seriously at all unless he wants to play RT

I'd almost rather have Tebow as a backup.

Steelers just need to stick to the script - use a mid-round pick on a Cerebral QB with a good arm.

I'd take the big slob!

Hell to the no!

He ate so much that he makes Jabba the Hut look like a slug. There's no way in hell I'd give him a look. We have very limited money to spend and we need to bring back Keenan Lewis, not this useless fat piece of ****.

everyone HATES jamarcus, he is what he is....its really not his fault the raiders and some other teams were dazzled by his gigantic arm and perfect looking spiral...he was a fringe first round talent thriving off of a sugar bowl where he destroyed ND, his measuables gave him a boost in rankings and he went to an awful team for a person like him (with $60 million) to mature as a player and a person.

i dont like want him, but i dont get the hate for him...he was never that good, i didnt expect him to be that good but he can play and he didnt hurt us at all, just a bunch of blind hate for a guy who never lived up to what not many expected him to be

Well... He talks about work ethics and whatnot, yet let his weight plummet to 320 or something like it. I mean, that weight is guard material... And he is still at what... 308? As Ktrain said, thats almost the measurements of a RT in NFL. It'll take him a while to get to a condition level which is just remotely acceptable. Sure, he has all off-season but I would be most careful with this one. I'm not saying its impossible to loose that much weight and get in shape and all that jazz. I just find that given his previous history I find it hard to believe that he'll be able to do it, let alone do it long term.

Best of luck to him though. I would not want him as a Steelers, but he was never really a bad kid as far as I'm concerned. He was just overvalued and then Raiders happened to him. Better players has failed in Oakland.

Yes, with Willie Colon gone we need a back-up at Left OG. At 308 lbs. Russel fits the bill. Also, I never heard he had any off-field issues other than littering -- leaving a trail of Snickers wrappers everywhere he went.

Hes had more chances then many of of, and we'll never see that kind of money. Not my fault he wasted his opportunity. No thanks...go flip burgers.

Leave him at 308, and he can be play both backup QB and backup Nose Tackle. :)

Then we got to pray he doesn't eat himself out of the NFL again to go along with his drug binge...

To me his comments seem like he is running out of money and is trying to say whatever he can to get paid again. Which almost everybody would do in the same situation but still... Id rather not.

Maybe he can kill 2 birds with 1 stone this time around and add his liquid codeine to milkshakes...

Good lord no

No way. Bust. I'd rather a 100 year old Charlie batch.

Why not Art Schlichter? Perhaps Ryan Leaf? At least one of them is bound to be out of prison.

Draft an Osweiler type QB...
