GAINESVILLE, FLA – At approximately 8:26am on January 10th, 2013, the Gainesville Police Department received a 911 call from a witness that reported a male subject and a female subject involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical.

Officers arrived and identified Christopher J. Rainey, BM 3/2/88 as the male involved. Witnesses told officers that Rainey and the victim got into an argument over Rainey’s cellphone. The female victim entered the vehicle of Rainey’s roommate, and Rainey confronted her on the passenger side of the vehicle, and began pulling her out of the vehicle. Witnesses then observed Rainey slap the victim across the face with an open hand. Both Rainey and the female victim then fell to the ground. The victim was able to run away, but Rainey chased after her because his cellphone was in a bag the victim was carrying. Rainey grabbed the bag again, and they both fell to the ground again. Neither party suffered visible injuries from the encounter. Multiple witnesses confirmed the incident.

The investigation revealed that Rainey and the female victim have been in a dating relationship for approximately nine months. Rainey was ultimately arrested by the Gainesville Police Department and charged with one count of Simple Battery (Dating Violence.) Rainey was transported to the Alachua County Jail for booking.

Someone made this comment on PFT:

Ok, hitting a woman is wrong but based on this story she stole his cell phone and he was attempting to retrieve his property. Was she arrested for theft? If he stole her phone and she slapped him would she have been arrested? Again, hitting a woman is wrong but so is the apparent double standard.

Kind of hard to disagree with him. Obviously he should not have hit her, but he wasn't the only one in the wrong here.

Would it of been a crime had he jammed the phone up her ***? Bitch is crazy sound like! Still no excuse to slap her!

Let him go, If this organization wants to keep it "high class" as it used to have a rep of being a great organization, make a statement and let him go.

I know he is a good kick returner. Between Ben/Holmes/Ward/Harrison/Clark/T'Amu this is getting old.

That ship sailed a long time ago. No such thing anymore in the NFL. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Agreed, their position on cutting troubled players depends on the player's position on the depth chart.

It has always been somewhat of a myth. Ernie Holmes was shooting at police helicopters back in the 1970's.

Just to follow up from rotoworld.com:

Chris Rainey was cited for defiant trespass when he entered the Meadows Racetrack and Casino outside Washington, Pennsylvania in December.
Rainey was apparently a degenerate gambler, as he had signed himself onto a self-exclusion list allowing himself to be banned from that facility and others. Rainey had also been arrested and accused of a felony stalking charge in Florida in 2010 after threatening a woman and texting "Time to die." GM Kevin Colbert termed Rainey's Thursday arrest "extremely disappointing," confirming that the tailback's "conduct" was the reason for his release.

Did she steal his cell phone? If so, she should be charged. If she did, and she is not charged, this sends the message it is okay to steal. And expect to get slapped in the face!

If guilty, he should get what is coming. So should she if she stole his phone. I can just picture them standing and yelling at each other. Sheesshhhh

It is not right to hit anybody, except in self-defense. The law applies equally to both sexes. As for stealing, regardless of her relationship to him, if she took it without his permission, then that is stealing.

I don't know what happened. If he is guilty, then he has what is coming to him. I just wanted to point a few things out.

Oh i agree im not saying she isnt guilty of something, i just dont think she was stealing it in the traditional sense of she was taking it with the intention of never giving it back and selling it at a pawn shop for money...

Like i said she probably found something on the phone she didnt like and took it to confront who or what was involved.

And he flipped out...

Either way she shouldn't have taken his phone. But that is peanuts compared to what he did....

I mean i seen people on ESPN asking about whether she was going to get charged with Theft and defending rainey...

Eyewitness: Former Steeler Chris Rainey Didn't Slap His Girlfriend
By Dom Cosentino, Jan 11, 2013 1:55 PM

We told you yesterday about Chris Rainey's arrest for allegedly slapping his girlfriend in Gainesville, Fla., which led to Rainey getting cut by the Steelers by the afternoon. Late last night, we received an email from a woman who says she saw what went down, and that her version of events doesn't match the account police say they got from other witnesses. The woman, who identified herself as Heather M., has verified for us that she lives on the same block as Rainey. A Gainesville PD spokesperson has also confirmed that police responded to a 911 call for the incident involving Rainey on that same block.

As the email shows, Heather had initially contacted Jamison Hensley, ESPN's AFC North blogger, and that Hensley recommended she send it to us. We decided it was best to go ahead and run the email in full. Thanks, Jamison! We can take it from here!

From: Heather M.
To: Dom Cosentino

Mr. Cosentino,

I wrote this email to the ESPN writer who wrote the article about the arrest. I was told that you would be a good person to contact about it, and that you would be more likely to act on it.

Thanks for your time,
Heather

————— Forwarded message —————

Mr. Hensley,

I am writing you in regard to your article about the Steeler's dismissal of Chris Rainey after his arrest this morning. Chris is actually my next door neighbor and I happened to see the whole ordeal transpire from my apartment as I was getting ready for class this morning. What the police report/your article describes as Chris "pull[ing] the woman out of a vehicle...and then slapp[ing] her in the face with an open hand" was actually him pulling on a backpack that she was also holding and she took a few steps outside the open car door that she was sitting sideways in (because he obviously pulled harder than she did). The only thing that I can imagine witnesses claiming to be a slap to the face was when he tried to snatch the bag and she put her hand in the way and his hand made a slapping noise against hers.

By the time I left for class, there were police officers taking statements, but the girl with whom he was arguing was telling the police officers the truth about what happened, so I did not feel it was necessary to make a statement. It seemed like they were just going through a formality because 911 was called. As a result of reading your article, I contacted GPD and asked to file a report on what actually happened. I was treated like a criminal, despite being a straight A student and never having even a little trouble with the law. I was accused of lying and told that, although they can't tell me who reported what, there was at least one witness who said they saw him slap her in the face.

I think that it is also worth noting that the person who called 911 was a neighbor who openly dislikes Chris and his roommate and wanders the neighborhood asking if she can have our passwords for our internet instead of buying her own.

Thank you,
Heather M.

Chris Rainey’s girlfriend denies that she was assaulted

The girlfriend of former (eventually) Steelers running back Chris Rainey says that Rainey didn’t assault her, and that the charges against him should be dropped.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Rainey’s lawyer read an email from the woman during a Friday bond hearing.

Rainey’s girlfriend claims that witnesses who saw Rainey slap her face are “mistaken.”

Even if the girlfriend’s version of the events results in the charges being dropped, it likely won’t keep the Steelers from dropping Rainey. The team has said he’ll be waived, something that can’t happen until the day after the Super Bowl.

As MDS pointed out earlier in the day, Rainey had two previously-unreported brushes with the law during his rookie seasons.

In other words, they likely made up, are back together, and she is trying to undo the damage he has done to himself. At least that is . my suspicion.
