Ryan Clark watched last week as rookie Anthony Smith grabbed the headlines with two interceptions and made his presence felt in the open audition at free safety. Clark had a standout game and impressed coaches with his playmaking ability.

As a five-year veteran, though, Clark knows making plays likely is not the most important thing the coaching staff is looking for in the man who wins the competition. It just may be the man who is steady and does not make mistakes.

"It's not a situation where this guy has to make this many plays or this guy has to do this, and this is what will separate you," said Clark, who signed as a free agent with the Steelers in March to compete for the job vacated by Chris Hope when he signed a contract with Tennessee.

I'm very interested to see how he does. I have heard a lot of good things about him though.

Same here. Funny thing is everyone said Hope leaving would hurt us. I've never thought that as I wasn't a big Hope fan. And yet here we are with 3 guys playing that one spot pretty well already.......:tt02:

Chris Hope was a good not great player. There has been way to much talk about us lossing Hope. We won't feel it all. I think Ryan Clark will prove to be just as good or better then Chris Hope. Anyways Clark is only keeping the FS spot warm until Anthony Smith is ready. I don't think Smith will start this year but you never know.

yeah i never got the fuss about losing him. sure he would've been nice to have back just to keep the chemistry the young secondary had, but he was not worth the money he wanted. clark will fill in just fine untill 07 when smith takes over. i can't wait till next week cause i actually get to see a preseason game on espn

Hey you didn't miss much for the Cards game trust me. The only stand out was Smith. But Holmes and Reid both did well out there the other day. That was nice to see. Oh and Keisel dropped Edge for a two yard loss on the first play of the game. That was sweet.

I have to agree with you on what you said Black. He was good, but not great. Not the type of player you cringe at the thought of losing him. The guys we have seem very capable of filling his spot.

We need one of these guys to step up and assert themselves at safety opposite Troy. It can't be one of these, well this guy was good at this and this but the other guy was better that something else. Safety is far too important a position to not have a definative winner to go out there and be the regular starter and work with the defense.

Smith should replace Clark at some point during the season.

he probably should, but i don't want it to happen, i want whoever gets the starter job to keep it for chemistry reasons.

Chemistry reasons? Well if Clark is the starter or Smith there will be some chemistry issues. Yea Clark isn't a rookie like Smith but he still has to get use to playing with the rest of the guys on the defense like Anthony Smith. I just want the best player to start and who ever is then so be it. Even if that means starting a rookie at FS.
