View Full Version : How bad do the Steelers miss William Gay?

I've watched Gay play a few times in the Cardinals games and he's playing pretty good, coincidentally Cardinals are also 3-0 and have shut down opponents, Patriots only scored 18 and Eagles 6 against them. He was never good at getting INTs, only has had 3 so far in his NFL career according to wikipedia, but how important was he to this Steelers defense?

I didn't pay attention to what happened to him in the off-season, did he ask for too much money and Steelers didn't want to pay or what? Do you think it was a mistake now, or still a good move?

I actually think Gay was an above average CB in a system that didn't fit him. I think our secondary would have been and be better if it weren't for LeBeau. I think he is the problem by forcing guys to fit his system instead of looking at talent and changing his system. For example, Woodley spends a lot of time on coverage.

No, he is an example that the reason the defense isnt great anymore isnt just players. If he is average at best here, but plays well elsewhere, that should be noted. Its evidence that it might not be the players causing the defensive collapses.

Don't miss Gay at all; we are perfectly capable of getting burnt as bad this year as we did last year.

Getting average players like Gay on defense are what started getting us in trouble in the first place.

Gay was mediocre and got burned alot when he was here. He's not missed(LOL),we have plenty
of other issues to deal with and current guys to rip.

Yep he is sooooo bad that he is the starting rcb for a 3-0 team that has given up 40 points in 3 games. Man he sucks!!! Or our defense sucks and our coaches and coordinator sucks and he was fine.

Didn't people used to kill Gay when he was here? I vaguely remember that.

But opposing teams have a 61% completion rate against us and 54% against them. We played Sanchez one week, so that really helps. They are 3-0, the stat that really matters.

Apparantly, the Arizona Gays. He plays offense, Defense and special teams for them, all alone with help from no one.

I will never miss him. He was never good. Ever. In fact, he is the sole reason I can't bring myself to buy a Rainey jersey.

If anyone thinks Gay is the reason that Arz defense is playing great right now they don't know their football.

All I am saying is that Gay was average here. Good Blitzer, decent coverage, there he is doing well. So, that tells me either Gay needed a change of scenery, or LeBeau and company are the problem. If a player is terrible or average here, and better than average elsewhere, you have to look at the coaching. That is all I am saying.

Ray Horton was his DB coach here lol.

Right, further proof LeBeau is the issue.

Or that Gay is surrounded by a Pro Bowl secondary, on a team with an insanely better pass rush with much more talent on the D line.

Are we really equating the Arizona Cardinals success to the acquisition of a sub par nickelback?

He is there starting rcb and no. I am saying that, in my opinion, his play in Arizona compared to here is evidence that it is time for LeBeau to leave, by choice or not.

Gay and any other cb can only cover so long, even he couldnt cover anyone for 10 seconds and our defense doesnt get to the QB and thats why we dont get many turnovers.

The guy that couldn't keep up with a tight end against the Patriots?

Or how about this question: How badly does this team miss a true captain with fire on D??

Yes, we need a player like Farrior again on the D. Not saying bring him back obviously, but we sorely need someone who is consistant (cough*Timmons*cough), hardnosed, and a leader. I knowFarrior was slow and chasing TE all over the last few years, but damn he was a workhorse for us in his time here.
