Joey Porter plans to retire as member of the Steelers
Posted by Josh Alper on July 18, 2012, 4:49 PM EDT

When linebacker Joey Porter went on injured reserve with the Cardinals in December, it seemed like a good bet that his career was over.

Porter confirmed that on Wednesday, telling Ian Rapoport of NFL.com that his knee problems weren’t getting any better and that he couldn’t play at a high enough level to justify extending his career any longer. Porter also told Rapoport that he’s spoken to Steelers brass about signing a one-day contract so he can retire as a member of the team he spent eight years playing for during his career.

“I plan on retiring this year,” Porter said. “I already talked to the Steelers, put some plans together on signing with the Steelers and retiring as a Steeler. It was a good career. I have no regrets about nothing.”

Porter made three Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl while a member of the Steelers and was named to their all-time team. He added another Pro Bowl berth during his three years with the Dolphins before knee injuries sapped him of his skills over the last two years with Arizona. Porter was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 2000s and finishes with 98 career sacks, good for 30th on the all-time list.

Without question. The man was entertaining as hell, in just about every way.

I'm surprised the Steelers are giving him a one day contract to retire. They don't usually do that because it can mess up your cap. I'm sure they'll work something out though. If Kordell can retire a Steeler than so can Peazy.

He was so much fun to watch, I miss that personality. Dude was a beast.

Loved Joey Porter. He is neck and neck with Greg Lloyd for my favorite non-1970s Steelers linebacker. Lloyd ekes him out only because of the "3 count" he did on Al Toon at the Meadowlands. :-)

Haha I remember that too. Lloyd used to sit at midfield during warm ups and just stare at the opposing team. "don't run that **** over here" lol

Found this one from the Cincy Jungle quite comical! (http://www.cincyjungle.com/2012/7/20/3171063/bengals-banter-joey-freakin-porter#storyjump)

If you're a Bengals (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/cincinnati-bengals) fan, you just don't like the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/pittsburgh-steelers). It's plain and simple. You don't like their boring uniforms, their "Terrible Towels", their villainous defensive players, and their boisterous fans. You also don't like their success that they've had over the past half-decade or so.

No Steeler embodied the villain mentality more than Joey Porter (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/1627/joey-porter). He recently announced his retirement and our own Josh Kirkendall talked about some of Porter's exploits, including the infamous Las Vegas incident (http://www.cincyjungle.com/2012/7/19/3168518/joey-porter-and-the-lasting-legacy-he-left-for-pissed-off-bengals-fans) with Levi Jones (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2584/levi-jones). Most of his other incidents occurred on the football field. His adversarial relationship with the Bengals got to such a high level that it was chronicled on the NFL Network's "Top 10 Feuds" special back in 2007 (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-top-ten/09000d5d80742e9d/Top-Ten-Feuds-Joey-Porter-vs-Cincinnati). Take a look at the clip and try and convince yourself that, as a Bengals fan, you wouldn't want to do something to the guy that you would get arrested for.

Still, you have to admire the guy's NFL career. From 1999-2006 as a Steeler, he had 60 sacks, 18 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, ten interceptions, and three All-Pro/Pro Bowl selections. Though he talked the talk, he walked the walk on the football field (just not when he instigated fights in Nevada).

I suppose it's only proper that he retires a Steeler. He had his best years as a pro with the club and, like I said earlier, he was the consummate black and gold linebacker. To respect a player's accomplishments as a football player doesn't mean that you have to like them. Such is the case with Porter.
