View Full Version : AFC North: Who's got the best running backs?

All four teams in the North have a desire to run the ball and play great defense. Even if there is a conscious effort to use the passing game more often, every team is working to increase the effectiveness of their ground attack.

So who's got the best running backs? Taking into consideration any that are injured currently. This is the offseason roster so obviously not all of these players will make the final roster. The asterisk is of course the starter or likely starter for 2012.

Steelers:
Isaac Redman* - Starter
Baron Batch
John Clay
Chris Rainey
Jonathan Dwyer
Rashard Mendenhall - Injured
Will Johnson

Browns:
Trent Richardson* - Starter
Montario hardesty
Chris Ogbonnaya
Eddie Williams
Brandon Jackson
Brad Smelley

Bengals:
Jourdan Brooks
Aaron Brown
James Develin
BenJarvus Green-Ellis* - Starter
Dan Herron
Bernard Scott
Rodney Stewart
Brian Leonard

Ravens:
Ray Rice* - Starter
Anthony Allen
Damien Berry
Bernard Pierce
Bobby Rainey
Vonta Leach - FB

i believe richardson will be the best back, followed by rice

collectively the steelers could have the best group, but right now im gonna go with the browns overall....richardson is gonna be man beast like and hardesty has been hurt but hes a good back too, brandon jackson is a pretty decent 3rd down back

bengals look ROUGH at rb, thanks for putting that in perspective lol

I really like Richardson as well........The Browns RB's have the potential to be the best in the division........

I think every team in the division has some question marks at RB........The Ravens really don't have much behind Ray Rice....Pierce could turn out to be a good but who knows at this point.......

Mendenhall is the most talented of the Steelers RB's and its a shame he is coming off a serious knee injury since the OL is improved and there is a OC in place that would used Mendenhall to his max potential........I like Redman but I still question him being the main back week in and week out.......He never has had to carry the ball 250+ times in a season and until he does I will have some doubts......Dwyer has some talent but still don't know what think of him....Batch screams third down back to me.......Chris Rainey will be more of a weapon in the passing game......

How's Richardson going to do any damage when everyone including my Moma is at the line because of no fear from their passing game?

As a stable of back go, the Steelers have the best and most deep group. Until Richardson plays I have to say Ray Rice is the best back of the North.

Adrian Peterson had a nice rookie year with immortals Tarvaris Jackson and Kelly Holcomb at QB..........Richardson is Adrian Peterson lite to me.........

richardson is the best back since peterson, hes easily the most sure thing on the browns offense aside from joe thomas. complete back, total work horse

MJD had an incredible year with gabbert being awful, i think richardson puts up big numbers

There's going to be a lot of pressure on Richardson this year with Weedon starting as a rookie. Teams are going to load up to stop the run and dare Weedon to pass on them. Any TR gets on the ground are going to be well earned not only because of a young QB but also an offense live that is constantly beat up in Cleveland.

Rice always scares me, he's so damn small and runs with a lot of power but the Steelers know what he's about it's just a matter of executing. More speed in the middle of the defense and young, strong DL should help slow him down, in theory.

The Bengals ground attack doesn't scare anybody but Dalton is talented enough to make some plays and he's got a year under his belt now.

Overall the Steelers have the best stable in terms of depth but it's also full of question marks.

Ravens, solely because of Rice. TR in Cleveland should be great but we know Rice is.

I had forgotten how baaaaad the Bengals RB situation was until I saw that list. That will be a huge detriment to a second year QB.

Browns fans are stoked that Richardson is the second coming of Jim Brown. Atleast from some of the site's that I've been checking out. He's also making some enemies by comparing himself to Brown already.

Last season Peyton Hillis was a joke so this rookie is an immediate upgrade for them no matter what.

Being that our #1 has all of 2 starts to his name and the backups have even less experience we're probably at #3. There's potential, but potential doesn't always mean success.

Redman 2 starts
Batch- Hasn't even played in a preseason game
Dwyer- Does he even have 20 carries to his name?
Rainey- Rookie
Clay- Same as Dwyer

I just don't see how you can look at that objectively and say we're better than...

jim brown, a grumpy old man said he thinks richardson is an ordinary talent for the position. richardson has said all the right things in response to jim brown just being an ***

When Franco was about to beat his total yard record and challenged Franco to a race. Franco was past his prime then but blew Brown away in the race and think it aired on one of the major networks and maybe ABC. Was funny stuff to watch after Brown ran his mouth and had to eat crow. If you can find it on You Tube it's worth a watch.

The NFL thinks Jim Brown is some kind of god and the Browns fans worship him as such. He's always been an *** who thinks nobody can compare to him or the era he played in. I'm so tired of the Jim Brown is the greatest running back ever crap, get over it already. I hate the Browns but I would love to see Richardson somehow put all that talk to rest (as long as it's not against us) LOL

In my book Brown isn't even in the top 10 of backs. The dude had some serious trouble as well and the Browns bought off the judges. He is a joke and a grumpy old man. I do plan to look for his race with Franco on You-tube right now.

I agree with the assessment of Brown's personality (an umitigated jerk) but the thought that he is not one of the best 2-3 backs of all-time (if not best) seems absurd. He had more than 12,000 yards in 9 seasons (5 14 game seasons and 4 12 game seasons) and rushed for more than 5 yard per carry over his career. Also mostly forgotten is that he was a pretty good receiver out of the backfield.

Was the defense as stout and a s fast as now? Brown was/ is a jerk.

Really? Does Johnny U fall out of your list of top 10 QBs because he did not play against Ds as "stout and fast?" What about the pipsqueak and slow (by today's standards) Jack Lambert? Better yet, are you stating that the Ravens 2000 defense was better than the 70's Steelers D because the Ravens D must have been "stouter" and "faster?" Is Revis automatically better than Blount? Romo better than Bradshaw?

There is nothing wrong with holding your position but it has to be consistent when applied to the Steelers as well, not just against teams we hate and arrogant jerks like Jim Brown. On the field he was a BEAST, probably the best to play the position. Again, 12,000+ yards in 9 12-14 game seasons is difficult to argue against. If those were 16 game seasons, it is like adding almost another two seasons to his stats. That would put him at about 14,000-15000 yards. In his final season of 1965, he ran for more than 1500 yards in 14 games. Another three seasons and he easily would have had more than Emmitt.

Harris Beats Brown at 40 Yards, Wins 2-Day Competition
January 19, 1985

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. AP Former Pittsburgh Steeler running back Franco Harris defeated former Cleveland Brown running back Jim Brown in the 40-yard dash Friday to win a two-day competition.

The televised contest, called "I Challenge You," evolved from Brown saying on national television last year that he could beat Harris in the dash.

Harris, 34, was clocked in 5.16 seconds. Hampered by a hamstring injury, Brown, 48, finished in 5.72 seconds. Although each participant won two of four events, Harris won the overall title because he took the dash.

"Franco beat me fair and square," said Brown, who grabbed his left hamstring during the dash. "I don't have any excuses."

About 1,500 high-rollers were invited to watch the dash and the one-on-one touchdown pass-catching competition Friday night at a casino hotel, which installed a makeshift playing field with artificial turf.

The event was televised in New York and Los Angeles Friday night, and will be broadcast on 139 other stations today or Sunday.

Harris won the touchdown competition with an eight-yard advantage. New York Giant quarterback Phil Simms threw the passes.

Brown won the first two events of the competition Thursday, defeating Harris in racquetball, 11-4 and 11-8, and then winning at basketball by rallying from a 20-14 deficit to win the final game in the best two-of-three event, 22-20.
