WR Mike Wallace, as expected due to his unsigned tender, didn't show for the voluntary OTAs Tuesday. Among other Steelers absent were DE Brett Keisel, CB Ike Taylor OLB Jason Worilds; attendance isn't mandatory until minicamp June1-14. RB Baron Batch (August) participated, but fellow ACL-repaired teammates RB Rashard Mendenhall (January) and NT Casey Hampton (February) were rendered spectators.

From our friend Chuck Finder at CBS Sports (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/PIT)

Nothing extremely concerning right here now. Ike Taylor is a workout beast in the offseason so he'll be ready to go. We don't know the reason yet for Keisel being absent but it could be due to his continued rehab from the groin injury last year. He says he's ready to go but I would imagine he wants to take it easy this offseason.

Other updates via Twitter this afternoon:

Larry Foote on the subject of taking on leadership responsibilities this season: @steelers: Larry Foote: "I think i've always been a leader on this team, one of the leaders, we've got a whole bunch on this team". Everybody has just got to step up. Bottom line, in this league, you’ve got to do your job, period. I don’t care who you are"
@DVEMike: Foote on replacing Farrior's leadership: "I have the respect around here. I've been here 10 years. That demands respect. They'll listen."
Emmanuel Sanders officially returning punts: @MarkKaboly_Trib: Emmanuel Sanders is your new punt returner ... or at least that is what he said happened Day 1 of OTAs
Casey Hampton & Rashard Mendenhall not participating in OTA's but are working out: @MarkKaboly_Trib: Mendenhall and Hampton working out feverishly on their own. Mendenhall looked good
Polamalu will attend all OTA's: @MarkKaboly_Trib: Troy Polamalu will attend all 10 OTAs and minicamp. Never done that before.
@CBSSportsNFLPit: S Troy Polamalu (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396174/troy-polamalu) made a rare springtime appearance -- he's normally at home in California working out. "It's nice for everybody new to see a familiar face," Polamalu said. "And, hopefully, to get myself better."
Sanders says Wallace deal will get done; Tomlin also agrees: WR Emmanuel Sanders (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/564943/emmanuel-sanders) was among the teammates who communicated with WR Mike Wallace about a potential long-term deal. "He is a guy who wants to be here," Sanders said. "It's the business side. It's definitely not because the Steelers (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/PIT/pittsburgh-steelers) don't want Mike here."
On the topic of Wallace not being at OTA's and is he (Tomlin) disappointed in that situation: "Not at all, this is a business, it's an element of the business. Mike came in, we visited last week, we had good communication. This process is going to run it's course. We know what type of young man he is, he's a hard worker, a diligent young man. It will be over soon, there will be some short term misery but it won't be significant in the big scheme of things hopefully." - note, key word here is "hopefully" but many expect Wallace to sign his 1 yr. tender and join the team by the time the mandatory camps start in June.
Video link (http://www.steelers.com/video-and-audio/videos/Mike-Tomlin-522/28c2a713-36aa-46a5-98ea-c871b60dfbb6)
Ike Taylor will be at OTA's this week, missed today due to flight not getting into until this afternoon: @TribLive_Radio: Ike Taylor will be at the OTA's tomorrow.
Colon and his new position at Guard: @MarkKaboly_Trib: Colon about guard being more suited to his mauling-style play "I'm going to kick (butt) regardless, it doesn't matter what position I am in". @DVEMike: Pouncey on Colon at LG: "He's going to be a monster." Pouncey on Gilbert staying at RT: "I don't think he cares. He just wants to play."
Colon also on the atmosphere at camp without guys like Hines Ward, James Farrior, and Aaron Smith: The atmosphere at OTAs is undeniably different without a handful of decade-long leaders."Not having Aaron [Smith], James [Farrior], Hines [Ward] -- with him smiling like always --that's definitely a different feel," said LG Willie Colon (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/408637/willie-colon). "It definitely helped using championships. All you can do is remember the legacy."
More players like the new playbook: @DVEMike Pouncey big fan of new playbook. "I like it a lot. Hopefully everyone else does. It's exciting, man."" -- So, ado = nothing.

worilds is among those who probably need it the most

Also from Chuck Finder..
Mike Tomlin wasn't concerned with a few absentees from Tuesday's voluntary OTAs. "It's important for as many people as possible to be here," Tomlin said. "We have a lot of work in front of us." New offensive coordinator Todd Haley opened with two prospective starting OL (still in college) and without holdout WR Mike Wallace.

Good to hear that Hampton and Mendy looked good and were working out already. Don't count Mendy out for the all import playoff late season. It would be nice to see him come in late year with fresh legs and help lead us to #7.

On a side note: Does anyone know if Chuck Finder's new book has hit the stands yet? I contributed a story or two to it and a photo, but not sure if they were included. Any news is appreciated.

Matt and I spoke with Chuck a couple of months ago on the podcast. His book should be available in August as he was hoping for a 'football season' release.

We'll be doing another show with Chuck probably in mid June and then again in august.

I liked Foote's comments, he's ready to assume a starting role again, basically coming full circle.

Ed Bouchette:

--- Rashard Mendenhall continues to run as he rehabs from his ACL. He said today that he has no real timetable, just to continue to rehab until he’s ready. He said he feels good and he’s doing more than just running in a straight line.
--- DE Brett Keisel and LB Jason Worilds are still not here.
--- Rookie NT Alameda Ta’amu also cannot attend these things until classes end at the University of Washington.
--- Ike Taylor practiced today after missing yesterday.

@MarkKaboly_Trib: NT Steve McLendon is listed at 280. He told me today he is 325 -- plenty big enough to fill in until Hamp is healthy

@MarkKaboly_Trib: Cortez Allen is running first team nickel

@MarkKaboly_Trib: Isaac Redman: "This offense is supposed to be easier on the o-line"

Some humor between Clark and Tomlin:

@MarkKaboly_Trib: Ryan Clark yelling across field to Tomlin: "If your QBs going to hold on to ball that long, you better draft some more OL in 1st round"

@MarkKaboly_Trib: Tomlin "I'm going to draft a safety next year ... a free safety."

@MarkKaboly_Trib: Worilds continues to have a wrap on his left hand. Keisel excused this week because of a family event per Jim Wexell

@MarkKaboly_Trib: "I am expecting a whole lot out of Keenan Lewis" -- Ike Taylor

@ScottBrown_Trib: Mendenhall is not ruling out playing in Sept. 9 season opener at Denver.

@ScottBrown_Trib: Jamres Harrison on new NFL rule regarding pads: “You’ve got to wear knee pads too? Wow. I guess I’ll just have to get used to it."

@MarkKaboly_Trib: “I want to be able to be smart like Hoke, I want to be quick like Jay Ratliff and I want to be powerful and strong like Hamp.... You put all that together and I want that to be Steve McLendon.” said Steve McLendon

From Steelers.com

“He has been making it simple for guys to understand,” said wide receiver Antonio Brownhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/antonio-brown/859114e9-d70b-477b-8eaf-6f34bb1ffc03/). “It’s been really fun. It was great to get out and start to run some of the plays. It’s going to be great when guys get on the same page and start executing it.”

Brown and fellow wide receiver Emmanuel Sandershttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/emmanuel-sanders/8dbfd17f-3e27-497e-a7ce-4462b4467a6f/) have already dug deep into the playbook, and while they have work ahead of them, things are moving along well.

“It’s going to be a good year,” said Sanders. “I am loving the offense right now. It’s based off of play action. We have a lot more of the offense to put in, but right now we are heading in the right direction.”

One player who is going to be called to execute it right away is Isaac Redmanhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/isaac-redman/5250dc8c-d3c1-4001-9e55-b6c6d991bb84/), who will be the Steelers starting running back when the season opens with Rashard Mendenhallhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/rashard-mendenhall/3e1ac879-3146-46f4-946b-216532a371b1/) still working his way back from an ACL injury.

“For me, being in the league a couple of years now, I am picking it up faster than the younger guys,” said Redman. “It’s not too difficult for us. Everybody is out here working together, helping each other out, discussing things so that when the season comes around we should be clicking on all cylinders.”

Running back Baron Batchhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/baron-batch/b18ae6d7-8bc6-488c-b73e-d55d99d6e045/) barely had a chance to learn Bruce Arians’offense last year before he was injured in training camp, missing the entire season. He likes the approach that Haley has brought to the offense, being a hands-on coach who is teaching as they go.

“It’s a learning process, but everyone is getting the hang of it and it almost flows easily as far as the no-huddle calls and just the way the numbering system works and the way the plays are called,” said Batch. “It’s easier for me to learn than some of the other offenses I have been in.

“I think Coach Haley does a really good job of explaining everything and being real hands on, showing what he wants done. When you have a coach like that players pick up on it quicker. He shows you how he wants it and I appreciate that.”

One noticeable change already made in the offense is moving Willie Colonhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/willie-colon/b008d43a-c215-4ae8-adf1-b03abff0a5fe/) from tackle to left guard. Colon is content with the change, and also likes the look of the new offense.

“From just being around him you can tell he is a passionate coach and strong minded,” said Colon. “I am not against change. It helps us explore different dynamics of what this offense can be. We know we can be a running team. That is our mold. We just have dynamic receivers and a great quarterback that we can throw the ball.

“He brings a great sense of balance and is going to feed to both of our strengths so it’s going to be exciting.”

Newly installed LG Willie Colon, who maintains he never before played anything but T in his life, feels he can bring his mauling style to the line's interior. “I’m going to kick (butt). Doesn’t matter what position I play,” Colon said. “That’s my temperament.”

The final OTA before training camp starts. This one is mandatory for all players. Adams, DeCastro, and Ta'amu have all reported and are working out as of today. Here is a summary of the updates coming out of practice today from the local Steelers media via twitter.

@MarkKaboly_Trib: 7th rounder Kelvin Beachum moved to guard.
@MarkKaboly_Trib: No James Harrison and Curtis Brown practicing during AM session of minicamp
@MarkKaboly_Trib: Trai Essex (from his mouth) that he started with first team OL at RT with Foster at RG. We know Pouncey, Colon and Gilbert on left side
@MarkKaboly_Trib: Baron Batch's blue don't-touch-me No. 20 jersey has been removed from action.
@MarkKaboly_Trib: Essex on Adams after Kugler got on him for quitting on a play: "A little thing like effort doesn't take a lot of talent to fix."
@MarkKaboly_Trib: Essex: "Mike Adams learned that's not how we do things here."
@DVEMike: Trai Essex on Oline: "I started at RT, Ramon (Foster) started at RG, 'Pounce' (Maurkice Pouncey), Willie (Colon) and Marcus (Gilbert) ...
@DVEMike: " ... And then halfway through they put in (David) DeCastro and (Mike) Adams to get some work with the 1s," Essex continued.
@DVEMike: Quote of the day uttered by Adams on what he did during OTAs: "I'd be in class watching film. I kinda checked out of school a while ago."
@steelers: "It’s feeling pretty good. Of course, I’ll take these next 5 or 6 weeks that we have off,do another strength program for knee" @baron_batch
@ScottBrown_Trib: Reporter, not a beat one, to E. Sanders: "Are you a litterbug?" Sanders: "No, not at all." Not making this up up. Happened after practice.
@MarkKaboly_Trib: Brett Keisel on Ben: “I am very impressed on how Ben has grasp this offense ... we are only going to go as far as he can take us.”
@ScottBrown_Trib: 2011 Steelers MVP Antonio Brown has Hines Ward's old locker, and he is well aware of the significance of it.
@ScottBrown_Trib: Brown "It’s something special. I feel like there’s no other place I want to be but right there.”
@ScottBrown_Trib: E. Sanders said he feels he is 100 percent after having surgery on both feet last offseason.
@ScottBrown_Trib: Sanders: “I definitely feel like I have something to prove. I haven’t finished an entire seasons yet...
@ScottBrown_Trib: ...I want to go for a thousand yards, everything that big-time receivers do I want to do that.”

A couple things that caught my eye:

Adams learning real quick that you better not quit on plays. - If he checked out school early , as he said, then hopefully he's focused enough to stay on target with football especially in the film room.

Ben picking up the offense nicely, and as Diesel said they will go as far as he can take them.

@Ken_Laird: With James Farrior gone, the #Steelers D has had Lawrence Timmons calling out the defensive plays this week in the huddle pre-snap

Not much to report today, the team had a light workout this morning and was dismissed early. The only real highlight was a throwing contest between Troy Smith and Byron Leftwich..

@DVEMike: So much for Minicamp Day 3. Byron Leftwich beats Troy Smith in a throwing contest, 71 yards to 68, and then Mike Tomlin scatters the troops.

@DD_TribLive: Willie Colon was wearing a Rey Mysterio like mask and carried a stuffed dog during camp today #Steelers

@DVEMike: It was funny hat day on the South Side, not that anyone was on the field for very long http://p.twimg.com/AvW8rPECIAESpS_.jpg
