View Full Version : How Many Teams Have Franchise Backup QB's ?

In a previous thread I defended the quality and record of our backup QB"s. I don't even have to mention their names as we all know who they are. We seem to have something special in ours, they don't seem to mind their station. My reply put me to thinking about other franchises and their QB's.

Does any other team have a situation like ours? It seems that many backup QB's around the league seem to hang with a team for a few years before moving on. I do believe our record with backups is pretty good. The member I replied to complained about our backups, and I argued otherwise. I am happy with what we have. Who the heck else is out there? Is Johny Unitas the third available? What the heck?

What are your opinions on backups?

Our backups are to the point of old and super slow. They are both obviously injury prone... i know arians is gone now, so they shouldnt get hit as much. Dixon was crushed too and he was fast, but he had to play in Bens scheme. Arians should have had a Vick style offense for Dixon ready to go or we should have drafted a QB like John Skelton. 6'5 255lbs to play bens role when injured.

Lets see now... Arians finished off #1 Couch in Cleveland, has had Ben in medical wear every year, Dixon, Batch, Byron have all been broken... Lets see if #1 Luck makes it. If Luck gets hurt i prove my point...

Haley needs a quality #2

If Weeden starts.... The Browns will release Seneca Wallace or Coly McCoy. Is either better than our glass QB's

i woudlnt mind mccoy i doubt they release him though

we need to find a matt flynn, who imo is going to suck as a starter but was easily one of the top 5 backup QBs

No matter how much we all want to see a better back up QB this year , we are unfortunately stuck with what we have. I'm hoping T Smith makes it just to have a younger QB in there instead of old (Batch) and slow (Leftwich).

I know Donovan McNabb is 36 yrs. old, but what about bringing him in for a look/compete for a roster spot. I know he wants to be a starter, but could he be persuaded to understand a new role. I like the idea of Ben, Donovan and Troy Smith in that order.
Any thoughts?

I am not happy wit Leftwich. Seems like IR every year. I don't mind Batch at #3, but I think we need to solidify the #2 QB position very soon.

We are a concussion away from an 8-8 season....but most teams will go into the tank when you get to the number two.

I want to see what Troy Smith brings to us in practice. We all agree we've seen enough of Batch and Leftwhich.

Batch is close to 38 so we get younger..

I'm not fully convinced that both Batch and Leftwich are going to be on the roster once the season starts. I would really like to see Troy Smith make a name for himself here, maybe in a slash type role and as the 3rd string QB. Batch as the 2nd and then Smith behind him.

Smith has some experience in that type of role and he's certainly athletic enough.

Ok.. We have Jerrod Johnson on the roster. Is he thowing ok now. Tannehill at the Aggies was Johnsons backup QB....

Tannehill went #8 -

How bad was this kids shoulder surgery.. He is the same size as Ben and runs...

Heres a small note from Jerry Glanville, UFL

Hartford Colonials head coach JERRY GLANVILLE made Texas A&M quarterback JERROD JOHNSON the first overall selection of the 2011 United Football League Draft. “Our league is all about a second chance, and we talked to a couple kids about a second chance,” said Colonials head coach and general manager JERRY GLANVILLE. “If Jerrod didn’t get hurt, we wouldn’t have had a shot at him. He would have been gone (in the NFL Draft). “If he’s healthy, we got an outstanding quarterback. He can run and he’s got a great mind, a great thinking. He can throw deep, make all the throws, run the quarterback draw and he’s hard to sack.”

Love those attributes that he brings to the table.

Seems he may have a real shot to be atleast the 3rd QB on the team if nothing else. We have real options now behind Ben. We just need to groom them properly. Seeing this kid and Troy Smith in camp will be nice.

No way Colt McCoy gets released, if it happened some way, wouldn't mind him at all.

Leftwich & Batch > McNabb.

I hate Troy Smith.

Give Johnson a shot.

Hence the term "back up." McNabb is done as a starter and that showed in both Washington and Minny, but he does have "starter experience." Troy Smith is a good athlete, but not starter material. I don't think that anyone is expecting them to carry a team any more, but rather fill in when or if needed. I don't think they're any worse than what we have already.

Yeah I know Troy is an athlete thing is we need a QB not an athlete,we have a better athlete in Dixon why bring another flop in, Dixon was better in his starts than Troy anyways and Mcnabb expects to be a starter and yes I would like to have him as a backup but he won't and as you said you don't think they are any worse than what we have so why pay more for the same or worse

McNabb is currently working with Warren Moon and his QB camp to improve his skills and make himself marketable for 2012. He still thinks he's got a few years left in the league. Hell I'd take him as a backup if we were in need. His best days are behind him but in a reserve role he could be serviceable.
