The Steelers go WR value with the first of their 4 seventh round picks, 231 overall, with Toney Clemons, 6'2" 210 lbs. Tall, big target that could be a factor in the redzone if he develops. Has issues with drops but may be able to make the team as a 5th WR. There is a need for the Steelers with depth at this position so he'll have an opportunity behind the 3 starters and
recently re-acquired Jerricho Cotchery.

These value picks late in the drafts all have issues either on the field or off to some degree so they are projects but their is a need for depth at WR.

Toney Clemons said his best unofficial 40-yard dash time at Colorado's Pro Day was 4.36. Clemons is cousins with Steve Breaston, and Breaston is one of Todd Haley's favorite players.

http://www.steeleraddicts.com/blog/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gifIn 2011 he had 43 catches for 680 yds, and 8 TD's. In 2010 he had the same number of catches but only had 480 yds so he increased his production pretty nicely over that time.

NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/profiles/toney-clemons?id=2532812)

Clemons was a reliable starter after transferring from Michigan. He is a huge and athletic receiver in the mold of Anquan Boldin. He has the same body type and strong base, and can go across the middle, using his core strength to break arm tackles and get upfield. Clemons has some value as a returner but would be merely serviceable in that role as a pro. Clemons has sixth-round value based on his potential to become a solid NFL pass-catcher.

Strengths

Clemons is polished as a runner, able to get into a cornerback's cushion off the line. He can break tackles after the catch and is productive at running drive routes across the field. He can catch a quick slant, break a tackle on a smaller corner, then look to run over a safety. He has the speed to be a deceptive deep threat and knows how to work underneath and sit down against zone coverage.

Weaknesses

Clemons has had issues dropping the ball. He is confident, but struggles to catch the ball with his hands and bring it into his frame. He is a physical blocker but can be too aggressive and a liability there at times.

The Steelers scouted him heavily so they must see something in him....Its the 7th round......little risk but potential for big reward......

Plax without the baggage. Ben gets the big target WR he wants.

While my man Limas ultimately ended up being a bust, I still claim that holding on to the ball and making clean catches is coachable. Speed and toughness usually is not.

Outstanding pick. Gives us the big guy we want and a big guy with speed too! Mr. Wallace, be very careful in what you say to the front office going forward okay?

I wonder what is Mr. Wallace thinking when he saw this pick? Just curious.

Love it as a project 7th rounder. He is large and speed, speed, speed! He was not going to be drafted but ran a sub 4.4 40 at his workout to put him on the radar. Cannot argue with the pick. I agree with those who want a kicker, or at least have one (the kid from Georgia?) on the speed dial the minute the draft ends.

Read his bio and what coach montgomery had to say.. local kid..nice size and 4.4 speed, saw he was projected in the 5th .. so I mean to drop this far with a shot at the 5th WR spot I'll take him

I like this pick.....just hope he doesn't turn into another Sweed....

The expectations for Clemons vs Sweed are night and day. We all expected Sweed to be a future star on the team when he was drafted so early. If Clemons makes the final roster anything he does will be a bonus.

If he steps up and make the team it sure would be nice to have a big bodied receiver....especially in the red zone. He can hopefully be that big target Ben has coveted.

Nice project to have. Low risk with round 7 pick. We have nice stable of receivers now, no reason to rush the kid in. Scottie can take his time to develop him.

I like it!
