View Full Version : Steelers 5th Round Draft Pick -2012 - Chris Rainey - RB - Florida

Steelers take their 5th round pick and go for running back depth and value with Chris Rainey out of Florida. Good hands, good route runner out of the back field. 5'8" 180 lbs so he brings that speed dimension and change of pace to the backfield. Pittsburgh is full of power backs, tough, hard runners so Rainey makes some sense here and will compete with Baron Batch.

Rainey, like his teammate Jeff Demps, is a burner. Unlike Demps, his track-speed translates to the football field, which makes him an intriguing prospect who has played various roles in Florida's offense. While not nearly as big as former teammate Percy Harvin, Rainey has been able to deliver for the Gators in a similar fashion. He uses his agility and quickness to make guys miss. He could move up into the middle rounds.

NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/profiles/chris-rainey?id=2532934)

Strengths Rainey is quick and decisive off the snap. He usually looks to get the edge. He is a very effective short-area mover who can ignite a two-step power move to beat a defender laterally and get to the edge. He is a straight-line runner but is elusive and make defenders miss in the open field. He is a good route runner out of the backfield and out of the slot and he will likely get work there early in the pros. Weaknesses Rainey is undersized and it shows when he tries to run inside or pass protect. He almost always looks to get outside and will go down on contact when running in the box. He is not willing nor able to block linebackers and protect the quarterback and will get overpowered at the next level. He is a strict work-in-space player at the next level and will have a hard time playing as a traditional running back.

He strikes me as a Haley type RB.

This guy will definitely add some much needed speed to the backfield. I have no issue going with Rainey in this round especially with such a solid draft so far.

At this point, they could pass on all the rest of their draft picks and I'd still be thrilled with this draft.

He compares pretty well with McCLuster. He is not a typical runningback, but if you find some way to get him the ball he has break away speed!

The new NFL were passing the ball dominates and teams need to provide their QB with all the weapons they can get their hands on....I agree that Haley had influence in the drafting of Rainey.........Rainey also offers value as a dynamic return man......I like the pick big time........Its going to be nice to see an OC like Haley actually use his RB's in the passing games as a legit threat.......The Steelers offense will soon be on par with the likes of the Pack, Pats, and Saints.....

wow , a burner , 4.38 speed that was Chris Johnson speed when he was drafted . I'm excited seeing this guy in black and gold .
I cannot wait to see all these 4 guys in black and gold . We probable got the heaviest and lightest players in the draft . lol

Nice.. A Sproles, Woodhead guy... Moore and Batch may be done.

Pouncey, Rainey and Gilbert - I love my Gators.. Spence is from Miami our home team here. I watch him alot and it really seems like he tackles someone on every play. Spence will make people pay attention

I a not saying that I hate the pick, especially in light of the great draft thus far, but it seems like Polk from Washington is a much more complete player (he can block some) than this little guy. If Rainey was seen strictly as a replacement for Mewelde, I would be OK with it but we already have Batch and Rainey will never be seen as fulltime back who could replace Rashard.

My guess is that 70% of the entire 2012 NFL draft class has texted something that stupid at one time or another. It is one of those ridiculous things that immature kids do when they get angry but most do not get to the police. It does not bother me at all.

Their second rounder is a bigger concern, not necessarily that he smoked pot, but he has multiple issues that can be called a "pattern." Let's hope he has learned his lesson because he will be a steel (pun intended) if he lives up to his potential.

They were not looking for a new Moore though. They needed speed and that is what they got. We have plenty slow RBs who can run hard up the middle and who have decent blocking skills.

I understand your point, but wonder where he fits in. He is a good return man but we already have Brown/Sanders.

On offense, he is redundant with Baron Batch, except Batch can block.

EVERY analyst I have seen has said the Steelers need for an RB comes from the necessity of replacing Mendenhall. Rainey will never fill that position.

JensK

I don't see Rainey and Batch being the same kind of player. Rainey is faster and more shifty. That said, there will be one or two RBs who won't make the roster at this point.

I agree totally ...

That said, Haley is not Bruce and a player like Dwyer may suddenly become the next NFL stud RB ...

I don't know... Everyone keeps talking about Baron Batch but the fact is that we have not seen him take one single snap for this team, nor do we have any clue whatsoever how fast he will be after his injury. While this pick hardly gives you a every down RB, you get a young and healthy RB to compete in training camp. It makes sense to me at least.

He will definitely free up Antonio Brown from punt return duties. Other then that, I don't like the pick. He will not beat Batch out because Batch can run between the tackles and is a better "runningback". This guy is an "outside edge" type of guy. He's a special teamer to me. Period.

There are rumors now surfacing that Polk has a degenerative back condition, which is why he has fallen so low. He was picked by many as a second rounder and still has not gone in the 7th round. Rainey looking better every minute!

I hear ya. But Rainey doesn't run well between the tackles. He trys to bounce everything outside. We saw that in Reggie Bush for years and how'd that turn out before he learned to run inside last year?

I'm not saying I can't be wrong but I see Rainey as a hell of a special teamer. But that third down back? Well, we'll see.

Since we haven't seen either player take a snap, the assessment is fair. By just reading their bio's, I'd take Batch as the 3rd down back. And Batch will be back.

Chris Rainey is the definition of versatile. The man is an absolute monster with the ball in his hands. I guarantee you he makes this team. With Antonio brown starting, Chris Rainey will be the primary kick and punt returner. He will see the field on offense. He's just too explosive to not utilize. He could be a monster in the slot and catching out of the backfield. Not to mention he blocked like 312 punts at Florida. As a gators fan who's seen every game Rainey has played, I could not be happier with a fifth round pick. Great value. This is the best draft the steelers have had in a long time.

Only Arians would run Rainey up the Middle into the Tackles...

Arians is gone now Real Deal...

So Rainey should be fine busting around the edges... Catching Passes in the flat... Then try to tackle him... Haley will have a good 3rd down tool here.

Living in SEC country and having seen way too much of Rainey on the opposing sideline this might be a huge steal for the Steelers. The guy can return kicks, play rb, line up in the slot, he's an exciting and explosive football player.

He is one of those players who has a chance to take it to the house everytime he touches the ball.....and he has the ability to do it as a special teams player...a running back...or as a receiver.....gotts love the versitality and the nightmares he can cause for opposing defenses with his speed and ability to line up all over the field.

I see him as a special teamer for a while. Antonio Brown has become too valuable to continue to return KOs and punts. Good pick, but I don't expect to see him in the backfield this upcoming season.
