View Full Version : Steelers 1st Round Pick 2012: David DeCastro - OG - Stanford

The Offensive continues to be addressed, thank goodness! Outstanding pick, never thought he'd fall this far but I started getting excited around pick 15. I guess we can thank the Patriots for making that trade with the Bengals and the Browns taking yet another QB.

I love this pick, the football guys answered my prayers tonight in round 1! Welcome to Pittsburgh man! Ben, hopefully you'll have a few less grass stains on your jersey in the future.

1st Round, 24th Pick
David DeCastro Bio (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/profiles/david-decastro?id=2533043)

DeCastro is an extremely polished guard out of Stanford who started for three consecutive years. While he is considered an early entry junior, he spent four years at Stanford and has already graduated. He is a disciplined and NFL-ready player who likely will warrant a starting spot immediately through his play. He could be one of the highest draft picks at the guard position in recent years, and he could easily go in the top 10.

Strengths

DeCastro is a technician on the field and is beautiful to watch for those who respect offensive line play. He is very quick off the ball to get into his block. DeCastro is able to shuffle nicely to avoid trash when pulling or down blocking. Once engaged, he is very strong to his ground. He demonstrates a good snap upon contact with defenders and is usually the one providing the drive-back pressure on his man. Once locked on his man, he can drive and maneuver them at will using his very strong upper body. DeCastro is extremely controlled in his movements, and he has body control and overall balance that is rare for a man his size. DeCastro is very athletic on the move and can key in and adjust well on his moving target. It's nearly impossible to find many weak points in DeCastro's play throughout college, and he could easily be the best lineman on his team as a rookie.

Weaknesses

DeCastro is inconsistent when finishing run blocks downfield. There were times in 2011 when he would fall off his blocks at times -- although never an effort issue, there are some slight hitches in his bending and footwork downfield that cause him to fall off slightly. He is not a violent puncher with his hands, but he doesn't necessarily need to acquire that trait because he is such a technician.

Plain and simple. STUPID pick. This guy is built for a drop back passer. Explain to me how he is going to be a starter from day one? He does not sustain blocks long enough to be a pass protector for a QB like Ben. Most of his highlights have been against inferior opponents on inferior teams.

What pick did you want? I was hoping The Lions didn't take him but felt The Lions would take Reiff and it was a no brainer to take DeCastro. He's the #1 Guard and was still on the board. If you listened to all the experts DeCastro was one of the sure fire picks and The Steelers got him. Thats a win in my book.

With all due respect, You don't know what your talking about.

Think for a minute, Haley is putting in a passing game that Ben won't have to hold the ball as long any more. And...we are going back to running the ball and establishing some balance on the offense. With Decastro, the running game will be strong and on passing plays, he will be more then ample to protect Ben.

JShare86
04-26-2012, 11:49 PM
I think he will make a big difference in the run game, but those of u that say oh great now Ben will have protection I disagree. It wouldn't matter who we had for our o line Ben is going to take sack after sack after sack because that's the way he plays he holds the ball too long. That's why I think it pointless to draft o line early we won 2 superbowls with terrible lines.

Read some scouting reports on Decastro... There's not much if anything bad to say about him. He's 6'5", he's mean (can't teach), athletic, smart. Casserly just said on NFL Network that he sees him as a better prospect than Alan Faneca was coming out of college. DeCastro is by far the best guard in this draft. It's not even close. It's extremely evident that Colbert and the Steelers brass loved him as well, and they were entertaining trading up for him.

Solid Pick!

David DeCastro, Offensive Guard, Stanford

One of the best picks of the entire 2012 first round, DeCastro was our No. 6 overall player in the 2012 draft class. DeCastro's ability as a pure guard will make him a fixture in Pittsburgh along what's becoming a very good offensive line.

DeCastro is a power guard who is more agile than most, and at worst, we see him being a multiple-time Pro Bowler in the NFL.

“With the 24th selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select offensive lineman David DeCastro, Stanford University”.

And so, a dream was made for not only the young offensive lineman, not only Pittsburgh Steelers fans, but also the Steelers front office, most notably general manager Kevin Colbert, who had identified a few players the Steelers would be willing to trade up to get, with DeCastro being one of them.

After getting the best guard in the draft it would be stupid for them to trade Wallace. They can use him in 2012 and then get a 2nd or 3rd round pick in the 2013 draft as a compensation when someone overpays for him as a free agent.

My favorite thing about DeCastro is that he allowed one sack during his 3 years at Stanford. He's still pissed about it and calls it "the sack". This guy is a super competitor and it shows in his game film. I just finished watching the VT/ND/Oregon game films and he was flat out dominating in each game. His run blocking from what I saw was the most impressive. He would literally will the D lineman where he wanted on most plays and open holes that even Spindenhall could navigate through with no hesitation needed.

As for how we got him.....everyone else was going for the guy that could score TDs. We took the guy that creates TDs.

Depends on how much of a dick he and his agent continue to be. I don't want someone on our team that doesn't want to be here. We have to pay Antonio Brown soon too. We can't pay everybody super duper money. It's not the way we do things.

I haven't been this stoked over a number one pick since Big Ben.....this guy will solidify the right side for the next decade.

Incredible he fell to us!!!! Let's get camp started already! :tt02:

You weren't stoked for Pouncey?

I thought Pouncey was a solid pick but with the rest of the line in shambles it was hard to get excited about what he could bring...now with Decastro to Pouncey's right side.....dayummm.....we just took this line to the next level!!

First time in years I have been even remotely confident in the offensive line, we have gone from pathetic to formidable regarding the O-line.

Yes, the happiest I have been at #1 since Ben. A HUGE need filled with the best player possible at that position. Just solidifed the Oline for the next 10 years or so. DeCastro will be the anchor, will also free up Pouncey as well. Could be our best guard since Moon Mullins. Not with the addition of Adams O-Line looks great.

DeCastro started off what has been an outstanding draft so far. I know he hasn't proved himself yet but I'm a believer that he's going to be the starter in week 1, he's just too good not to be.

Do you see him at LG or RG? I thought he would be a great trapping LG.

He can do both probably, but he played RG most of his career and I have him as a better RG than LG. We do, however, need a LG more than RG so who knows.

Did anyone see the Coach T interview during the 7th round today on NFL network? They asked him a few questions then asked him about DeCastro. I've never seen him smile like that. He is flat out giddy about having him, and I can't imagine anything that would keep him from starting week 1 when we give Peyton his first loss as a Bronco.

Only flaw in Decastro is that he WAS a Seachicken fan

Means NADA now. That was then, this is now and beyond.
Remember Big Ben was a HUGE Elway admirer along a Niners fan.

I can overlook/ forgive such past flaws. :rasberry:

Getting more excited about watching him every time I read something on him. His father and grandfather both played Rugby in South Africa. The Rugby mentality that he brings will endear him to all the Steeler fans.

Just thought I'd throw this out there:

@EdBouchette: Some people call #steelers rookie G DeCastro the next Faneca. DeCastro wearing No. 66 today at rookie camp
