View Full Version : 2nd round has not been kind to the Steelers

The 2nd round hasn't exactly been a money pick for the Steelers in recent history. Marcus Gilbert was Pittsburgh's 2nd round choice in 2011 and he's certainly earned his money and has a bright future. In 2010 they chose LB Jason Worilds who did see significant playing time with the injuries to James Harrison and Lamarr Woodley but still had his share of struggles.

2009 and 2008 were 2nd round draft picks to forget; the Steelers took Kraig Urbik and Limas Sweed respectively, neither of which are on the team any more. You have to go back to 2007 to find the most successful Steelers 2nd round draft pick of the Mike Tomlin era. His first year as the Steelers head coach and they choose Lamarr Woodley.

You can make a case that the 3rd round choices of the Mike Tomlin regime have worked out exponentially betterhttp://www.steeleraddicts.com/blog/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif than the 2nd round picks. Mike Wallace, Curtis Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, etc. You can see a full list here (http://www.databasefootball.com/draft/draftteam.htm?tm=PIP&lg=NFL).

Normally a player selected in this round is a supposed to be someone you can count on for years to come and shouldn't be overlooked as a potential day one starter depending on your situation. It would behoove the Steelers in this years' draft to hit this one out the park.

It's really critical that we hit on our 2nd round picks. Those are the picks that should produce the core of the team. We've been lucky in later rounds getting good quality, but the 2nd round pick should be a good solid player, if not a stud.

We hit on Gilbert last year. So we are on the right track now. And I expect for them to hit again this year. With our needs at nose tackle, offensive guard and inside linebacker, we have to hit on our first three picks. Period.

That's why I want to move Wallace, get an additional 2nd round pick and maximize our chances of getting three new starters.

We need a couple shields this year.

The late picks are gambles either way.. so gamble harder and get the good players that dropped, injury, the burficts, RB, FB, Kickers, LS, P

2008 and 2006 were very ugly drafts

It's hard to say we're on the right track when we hit 1 out of the last 4 years (Gilbert, Worilds, Urbick (2nd pick, 3rd round) and Sweed.)

Let's hope Gilbert is the start of a number of years of successes in the 2nd round picks.

Right now I like the selection of Gilbert. If his injury problems continue however it may be second-guessed in the future.
Either way, we need 4-5 guys from this draft or via FA that can step in and play. Maybe not start, but they have to contribute.
