The Steelers don't normally retire numbers as we know. However it's an unwritten rule that players will not be issued numbers such as 12, 75, etc.

Does Hines fit into that category in your mind? Being that receivers generally wear numbers in the 80's it would potentially be somewhat difficult to not give that number out in the future even if they did decide to keep it "sacred" for lack of a better term. Case in point, 88 and 82 are issued without a problem these days. Even with the trend of using numbers in the teens now being more and more prevalent.

I agree, Hines is out and though it would look weird someone should take it if need be...

No he doesn't fit into that category. Give it out.

If it were up to me , I'd leave it shelved unless a player asked for that number.

I think the number should be given out but not this season. Keep it out of circulation till 2013.

They should reserve it for ~5 years and then start using it. Lynn Swan's number is still in use, so is John Stallworths.

Exactly what I would do too. Keep it out until he retires.

Yeah he fits in that category, don't give it out. Keep it this way for at least a two years.

That may be never...there is a long list of excellent WR's waiting to get in.

They gave out Swann & Stallworths # so no big issue with #86.

agreed, it's the "hall of fame" not the "hall of pretty good". ward is the "best" receiver from the best franchise, he'll get there eventually but not on the first ballott.

My opinion exactly, and who would ask unless they are ready to carry the mantle?

The days of not giving out numbers is gone now. IMO it was reserved for the epic players of the dynasty years. If they could get away with not giving out 88 or 82 they probably would not have done so since. I don't imagine anyone will wear 86 next year but it's possible in the following years.
