THE NEW YORK Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates have made progress toward a trade that would send much-maligned righthander A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh would pay at least $10 million of the $33 million Burnett is owed in the final two seasons of his $82.5 million, 5-year contract, a person familiar with the discussions said yesterday.

The exact amount of money involved in the trade depends on the quality of the prospects the Yankees would receive, the person said.
Burnett, a 35-year-old righthander, has struggled to a 34-35 record and 4.79 ERA during three seasons with New York and went 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA last year. His average of 3.98 walks per nine innings is second in the AL and fifth in the majors during that span among pitchers with 400 or more innings, according to STATS LLC.

Burnett would join a rotation that includes newly signed Erik Bedard and returnees James McDonald, Kevin Correia and Jeff Karstens.

I hope this happens....Burnett really hasn't been at his best the last few years but the new Yankee Stadium is a tough place to pitch since really its a terrible pitching park.....The Pirates need a vet pitcher to anchor their young pitching staff......I love my Buccos and I still follow them every year even though they have sucked since 1993......Man I was 13 in 1992 when the Pirates last had a winning record.....lol

what are we giving up?

I heard the Yankees were asking for Garrett Jones.....But the Bucs pulled Jones off the table.....I don't think the Pirates will have to give up to much....Really the Yankees are looking to dump Burnett due to the money he owed the next two seasons.......I think Burnett would be a good fit for PNC Park......

I bet his era is half a run to a run lower pitching at PNC Park........all I'm looking from Burnett is 13-14 wins, 3.50-3.70 era, and eat up innings.........

I admit I'm not a huge baseball fan but I do follow the Buccos to some degree. This trade, which went down officially yesterday, seems to be getting a lot of press for a guy who apparently isn't all that great. Is it just because he's a Yankee?

The Yankees agreed Friday to trade much maligned pitcher A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh for two minor leaguers, a deal that clears the way New York to add Raul Ibanez.

Pittsburgh will pay $13 million of the $33 million salary due Burnett for 2012 and 2013, a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made.

New York will receive 25-year-old right-hander Diego Moreno and 20-year-old outfielder Exicardo Cayones, both low-level prospects.

YOU MAY BE RIGHT IN FACT I WAS THINKING HE'S GOING TO A TEAM WITH LITTLE OR NO EXPECTATIONS INSTEAD OF PITCHING IN NEW YORK.HE MAY WIN 20 GAMES

AJ had the 10th highest run support for any pitcher during his time with the YANKEES, will he get that offense with the pirates? I think not

I loved the Burnett trade when it happened....here is what I said back in Feb.......AJ Burnett is going to surpass my expected win total for him......I knew he was a good fit for PNC Park.....

I predicted 13-14 wins and his ERA to be much lower........Burnett has been everything I thought he would be and a whole lot more......
