View Full Version : Is the AFC North the best defensive division in the NFL?

For the longest time the AFC north was a 2 team race between the Steelers and Ravens. The Browns and Bengals have been a step or 2, or even a flight of stairs, below the contenders each season save for an occasional upset. Both Pittsburgh and Baltimore were guaranteed to not only battle it out intradivision but also be competitive against any team in the league. This division is always about bruising defenses and the run game. Some things are changing on the offensive side of the ball as we've seen but on the defensive side everybody can stake their claim to being in the real "black n blue" division.

Now enter into 2012 and the team defensive stats are impressive to say the least:

Total Defense:
Steelers - 1st
Ravens - 3rd
Bengals - 7th
Browns - 10th.

Pass Defense:
Steelers 1st
Browns - 2nd
Ravens - 4th
Bengals - 9th

Rush Defense:
Ravens - 2nd
Steelers - 8th
Bengals - 10th
Browns - 30th

Yardage Allowed:
Steelers - 1st
Ravens - 3rd
Bengals - 7th
Browns - 10th

You can make a strong case that the AFC North is hands down the best overall defensive division in footbal. Other teams had great defenses in 2011, the 49ers come to mind as do the Texans & Giants but when you factor in that every team in the North was ranked in the top 10 in nearly every category, that's pretty impressive.

In my opinion, there's no such thing as good defense in the new NFL, only really $hitty offenses that can't score. The Saints and 49ers game and the Denver and Steelers game really confirmed that for me.

Why people are picking on our D???

Our offense is lame... :rant2:

We have a defense, which is more than what other teams have because some other teams in the league literally have zero defense. I just don't think defense makes the difference anymore unless they have takeaways, which are the opposing team's offenses fault half the time rather than anything the defense did. Take the Baltimore/Houston game yesterday. Was the Baltimore defense "good" or was Yates just awful? Or the Packers/Giants game. Was the Giants defense good or did the Packers offense just look completely flat?

I like our defense as is. I don't think it can get much better IF Harrison and Woodley are healthy. Those two applying pressure will make the difference in our secondary.

D agree. However, It's the offense that's going to do it. Don't know what that # is, bettin pretty low on the bar.

At one point in the season the AFCN was 1234 in total defense, i say yes and if the Browns ever get it together the AFCN will be a division no one wants to play...Plus we had 3 teams in this year playoffs

The Bengals should make big strides with the load they got for Palmer. That should turn into a couple very very good players.

The Bengals are going to make more strides with the additional draft pick they get from the Raiders. Their defense was banged up with Dunlap missing significant time this season but their front 7 is pretty stout.

The Browns will go as far as McCoy or whoever they get to QB that team will take them.

Look for the bengals to make a push for the top spot in the AFCN...

If the Rats go to the SB and win, they'll have the target on their backs and will fall off a ton..

the browns have 2 #1's as do the bengals i think...

thats 4 number ones and two top #2 picks added to the afcn via browns and bungles

we better make good decisions and start looking ahead.
