Tuesday news and notes

A bevy of Steelers did not practice today. In fact, the Steelers really didn't practice. It was more of a glorified walkthrough using a Nerf ball instead of a normal one for most of the session.

But two players who did not work were linebacker LaMarr Woodley and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

The bet here is that neither will play Thursday against Cleveland.

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Sanders favored his sore knee and ended up with a sore foot. Sanders had surgery on both feet in the offseason and likely will sit until the Steelers travel to San Francisco.

One player who did practice was guard Ramon Foster. He looks like he'll play against the Browns.

Nose tackle Chris Hoke will have neck surgery next week and his season is done.

It's likely Hoke's career is finished as well.

Apparently his stinger issue was not getting any better and the best course of action was surgery.

Arians said today that its a priority for him to get Hines Ward the 10 catches he needs to get to 1,000 career receptions - so long as its in the context of winning football games.

The Steelers wanted to get Ward some more catches against Cincinnati, but the Bengals doubled him all over the field, knowing what the Steelers were up to.

Quite honestly I think it's pretty lame for the Bengals to double Hines Ward just to stop those catches. It's not like you need to double cover Hines at all under normal circumstances. He's not going to run away from anybody and he's not a primary target in the offense at all.

12-07-2011, 04:38 PM
If Hines can get the receptions, more power to him. I just hope that Arians and Roethlisberger don't push it too much at the cost of offensive efficiency. You wouldn't think that they would, but it is an Arians-guided offense.

As long as he stays true to his word and not force the issue, I'm sure they will have several plays designed for Hines to get into open space (other than bubble screens).

Let Cleveland double Hines, that leaves the young guns in single coverage.

At this point in time Hines is the worst WR on the roster, I love the guy but agree do not force the issue!

Not the fastest or the youngest, but, Hines has the best hands, most physical, no one better in the clutch (AB is up and coming), one of the best at reading defenses / blitzes.

Speed and youth don't always equate to greatness - see Troy Edwards.

Just my opinion, and agree that he should not be force fed, but if he is open, throw it to him.

Oh please please please. Double Hines every play. Have 2 guys escort him to the toilet. That just leaves more foom for Wallace and Brown.

12-07-2011, 07:11 PM
Whoa there sailor! I would not use "worst." He is still a great receiver for what he does. Maybe "Not as useful," or "not as good."

Not trying to start a pissing match here but look at the group we have:

Wallace, Brown, Sanders, Cotchery, Hines

I'm all about getting Hines his catches but this is a must win AFCN game not a preseason opener for tinkering!

12-07-2011, 07:33 PM
Will he play to our strengths? We he play to the brownies weaknesses?

Our strength and our new identity, passing! Will he unleash Ben and Co. and pass all over the browns?

Thier weakness is defending the run, they`re the worst. Will he keep handing the ball to Mendy and Red?

Looks like it should be a clear night, I would like to see a great game called, pass the ball, mix in some run, get a big early lead, I hope. Then get Hines at least 7 catches and a TD if we can get the lead.

12-07-2011, 07:44 PM
Run into the line, bubble screen and run receivers deep. Any combo of those plays until the final whistle blows.

12-07-2011, 07:47 PM
Simple: Attack their strength!

12-07-2011, 08:05 PM
Hopefully stay balanced. That's the key.

12-07-2011, 08:09 PM
HOPEFULLY he will get Wes Saunders involved he has hands like a WR and the size of a slim Pouncey

12-07-2011, 09:14 PM
Throw the guy the ball ..let him get the 1000 catches... It's Cleveland everybody!

12-07-2011, 09:18 PM
I think "worst" is a relative term. Look at the group of pass catchers that GM Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin have assembled.

Mike Wallace: At this point the most well rounded, all round best WR on the team and the fastest player in the league.
Antonio Brown: Great kick returner, blazing speed, fearless across the middle, big play circus catch, weapon.
Emmanuel Sanders: Very fast, good hands, solid on 3rd and clutch situations, up and coming.
Jerricho Cotchery: Wiley veteran who's not a speed burner but as clutch as they come, very reliable in every situation.
Hines Ward: Lost what speed he did have, but still fearless and can get you those 3rd down move the chains plays.

When you look at the guys out there, being last doesn't seem that bad quite honestly.

Do we expect Cleve to just lay down so Hines can get his catches and us a W?

LOL hell no they're playing to win too!

Worst may of been a little extreme..

12-07-2011, 10:25 PM
If we don't beat Cle tomorrow night, do you think we have a chance in the playoffs? Rest assured that the coaches are not going to anything stupid so that Hines get his ten catches.

Worst on the team?? that is a little too extreme for me...He never had speed ,so you can't lose what ya don't have!! He has the surest hands out of the group, when he drops one everyone is surprised. Crotchery does not even come close, if he did he would still be with the jets. try not to forget Arnaz who I don't think has seen an offensive snap all year. Any how..

Bottom line is Hines can still get 10 catches and contribute to winning games IF he gets to see the field...

ive said my piece before on this and its been echoed in this thread. no need to re-iterate.

I was hoping he would retire for an early xmas present.

Run, run, bubble screen.
Run, run, bubble screen.
Bubble screen, run, long bomb.
Run, bubble screen, run
Run, run, short pass not enough for first.
Run, run, bubble screen.
PA pass, bubble screen, bubble screen.
Run, run, bubble screen.

Rinse and repeat!

With Sanders out now, expect to see more of Hines than you probably would have had Manny not been out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hines get force fed the ball early on like last week.

12-08-2011, 12:38 PM
I read that they expect Ben and co to come out airing it out building a lead then running the **** out of it...

12-08-2011, 12:40 PM
If we have a nice lead, then feed him the damn thing and get this over with!

He could also see the ball quite a bit vs. the Rams.

12-08-2011, 01:21 PM
Interesting little "FYI"

With a win tonight the Steelers can clinch a playoff spot.

Ravens even with a win cannot clinch.

Pittsburgh will have a better conference record than Baltimore even though they are a half game up on us.

12-09-2011, 12:46 AM
Not so much for Hines Ward tonight. He was a non factor after Ben left the game. Even after Roethlisberger came back, Ward only finished the game with 1 catch, leaving him 9 short of his 1000 catch goal.

Still 3 games left in the year, and there's no guarantee the 49ers game is going to be a situation where he can shine either. I would venture a guess it's going to be REALLY close for Hines come January 1.

Jets have to lose, Titans have to lose, Bengals have to lose....I think that is how the Steelers clinch a play-off spot.......
