View Full Version : No excuse to allow that 92 yd drive to lose the game

Absolutely no excuse whatsoever. You cannot allow a team with 1 timeout to drive 92 yds in just over 2 minutes and win the game. Blame falls squarely on the secondary for a horrible day. Blame all around but particularly on the secondary for this one folks. In that situation you have the upper hand. If you told me that the Steelers have a 4 pt lead with 2 minutes to go and the defense is on the field, my money is on them every time to hold on and win the game. Tonight that was not the case, not by a long shot.

Gay was targeted and blown up all day. Ryan Clark did not have a good game, even Keenan Lewis had questionable outing. Taylor got beat way too often and if Smith or Boldin catches any of those passes they dropped, it was over before the end.

I don't understand the play calling late in the drive, Lebeau left the corners man to man on the final 3 plays or so. I get it to the point of wanting to have more guys in for the pass rush, but they didn't get there and it was only a matter of time before Smith caught one of those. He got behind Gay multiple times and dropped sure completions and the one TD. In that situation you just never, never, let anyone behind you. Keep it in front of you and make the tackle. You play a prevent defense for the entire drive, you don't stop them, so you switch man to man and still can't stop them.

Gay has been pretty solid all year, but he was just downright awful tonight. Especially on that last drive, he ****ed up over and over and over again. He gave up every single catch on that drive I wanna say. Just ridiculous.

It's one bad game for him but it was the biggest game of the year. I'm absolutely done with him. That was **** poor coverage he had on that TD catch. He gave them 7. Bench him. I'd rather have a rookie in there learning and playing like that than a vet. Ridiculous.

But...but...we beat Brady... But seriously WTF was RC doing on that TD? I can't believe we shut down the pats and then lose to Succo

It's called PREVENT defense, God awful defense at the end. No excuse for that drive at all, plain disgusting for a hard fought game to end like that!!

Let's not go overboard here. Flacco had a good game, but I would hardly say he "owned" our defense. He pulled a Big Ben tonight. Plain and simple.

This secondary is awful, no excuse for a 92 yard drive, however, they kept them down to 16 points up until 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. Another words, all the offense had to do was score an additional touchdown or field goal and that final drive by the Ravens would've gone down differently.

A defense will always take energy from the offense. When the defense sees the offense can't put the boot on the neck of the opponents, it becomes frustrating and the pressure to hold the opposing team to under 10 points every game becomes a consuming and counterproductive force.

Let's say for good laughs that the Steelers make it to the Superbowl versus the Packers or Saints. This defense isn't going to hold either of those teams to 16 points. The offense has to do more and the only way to describe this offense is a bad one without an identity or organization.

Why they were playing man to man when they got that close is nuts they should have been back in coverage...dam this one hurts.

This should have been expected. You know what type of game we're going to get as fans. These 2 teams are mirror images of eachother and it was evident that there would be an ending like this. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. Our season is not over.

That's what I was screaming about. In a situation like that you want to keep everything in front you. I get that you want to put pressure on Flacco, and I get that your secondary has been playing well all year long. However today they were not, so why put them in that situation.

Far be it from me to question a Hall of Famer like Lebeau but man when your secondary is getting beat repeatedly I would be questioning their ability to come through late in the game.

Costly loss could well result in Steelers being forced to vie for a wild card spot vs. Bengals or team from AFC East...Bills or Pats most likely. Just a real tough one to swallow. Ratbirds converted 66% on 3rd down. Defense just could not get off the field, and was probably somewhat fatiqued at the end. Steelers ineptitude in red zone continues: 1 out of 4 tonight.

As I said in some other topic, a lot of the secondary woes falls back to the safety play in my opinion. Ike Taylor was pretty solid throughout the game, only giving up a couple of quick slants which is really really hard to defend without LB help. Ryan Clark is just horrible in coverage. He is never there to help either of the CBs to make a play. There is only a few DBs in this league who can play man-man throughout a game without giving up plays - Gay is not one of them, neither is Lewis. When you know this, the natural thing is to give safety help over the top and Clark is totally incapable of that.

Having said that, a lot of that falls back to Troy as well. We all love to see him play as a LB because he generates a lot of amazing plays when he lines up there, but he leaves Clark alone with the safety duties which is pretty rough if you are bad in coverage as it is.

Exactly. Woodley is like our Mariano Rivera. He's the guy that comes in and closes out the opponent with a sack. Frankly, Silverback did all he could. I think he and the rest of the D were spent by the last drive.

This is what I don't understand on both sides of the ball...I understand that every opponent is different BUT it seemed to me at least we used the same scheme of play in game 1 against the Ravens...now I only watched live till halftime then watched DVR version to be it seemed we played them almost exactly like we did game 1 except we didn't get pummled this game...I dont' get it...we use all this trickery againts the Titans and put pressure on Brady all day last game....Flacco is NOT scared of our D now...we aren't making him scared any more, there isn't as much pressure as we use to lay down on him....now Harrison had a GREAT game and thank God for him!!
This game is what it is..a loss, time to move on and hopefully beat Cincy. :tt02:

Reliving the nightmare that was the 2009 season. On that drive, all I could think of was the game against the Bengals when they came from behind. Sadly, I wasn't surprised to see it.

A loss to Baltimore always stings but I'm taking the good with the bad. O-line looked pretty solid and the offense seems to be doing nothing but improving. Though I think we need to find a replacement for Gay for sure, seeing him line up with Boldin is terrifying. Plus, what's with the defense not being able to get off the field on 3rd down? That was the key to the game imo....Gotta take advantage of those third and longs

I would hardly call 6-3 sucking. For what this team has been through this season, we are still in good shape. The O line is getting better, the defense is still playing pretty good despite injuries. Have you seen the rest of the schedule?

11/13 Steelers @ Bengals
11/20 --BYE WEEK--
11/27 Steelers @ Chiefs
12/04 Bengals @ STEELERS
12/08 Browns @ STEELERS 12/19 Steelers @ 49ers
12/24 Rams @ STEELERS
01/01 Steelers @ Browns

Going undefeated the rest of the way is very doable. This team has it's lapses but they definitely don't suck.

The defense choked, plain and simple. This was the worst loss for me since the super bowl. Our defense has got to be the most overated in the league. We only have 4 turnovers in 9 games. Look how many ints. we dropped. Couldn't stop them on 3rd down. This just shows you how misleading stats. can be. This game might cost us a playoff spot.
