If Hines Ward (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/1494/hines-ward) is sidelined with an ankle injury, his replacement might surprise you. "If he can't go, I am the starter," wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13295/emmanuel-sanders) told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_764237.html#ixzz1c3KnuHi8).

Sanders, who scored a crucial touchdown last Sunday, would get the nod over Antonio Brown (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13934/antonio-brown), the second-leading receiver on the Steelers.

Ward missed his second consecutive practice Thursday, but Sanders isn't counting on making his second career start. "As of right now," Sanders said, "we're going with [Ward]."

Hensley's slant: Most would've assumed Brown would get the start because he almost has two times as many catches (25) than Sanders (13). Brown is second-most targeted receiver, just three behind Mike Wallace (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12601/mike-wallace). But Sanders is considered a better run blocker and a more polished route runner, which presumably helped him take Ward's spot over Brown.

sounds like some bullshit to me

Neither one of them is a great route runner, and both have had issues with being in the wrong place and not on the same page as Ben. At this point you could make a case for either one, although Brown has had more splash plays than Sanders which is a big thing. Brown reminds me of Wallace, both super fast guys capable of stretching the field and making the big play or circus catch. Sanders can stretch the field too but he's also getting pretty good playing the underneath routes.

id say sanders is the faster one, but brown is much quicker and much more fearless.

the only thing this says to me is they are trying to further motivate brown to compete with sanders, other than that theres no justifying starting sanders over brown

Time for the boys to step up! I think they`re ready for the task!

Ward needs to sit IMO, the offense is better w/ out him. Throw Cotchery in there from time to time...

If either of these 2 still need motivation then something is really wrong. I like Sanders ability in the in intermediate routes, he seems to do pretty well there and has been able to start breaking some tackles and get some additional yac.

Brown though is so quick that if he can get off the DB at the line and get separation, it's lights out.

Brown's really starting to blossom, and to my mind is doing better than Manny right now.

Not as though it really matters, . . . how often do we only have two receivers on the field at any one time anyway?

I agree Brown is further ahead and IMO faster!

How much film study do they have on Sanders? Little to none, this makes all the sense in the world from that standpoint alone IMO.

doesnt matter...they can study all they want, you still play your best option and thats brown right now.

i bet he ends up with more snaps total and mor stats despite not starting

That's what I'm thinking, you can say he'll take Wards spot but that doesn't mean he's going to have more catches than Brown..

I'd like to see more of the Miller/saunders combo underneath catch it short and punish. One is 6'5"256 the other is 6'5" 270 THAT'S HUGE COMPARED THE A slot corner and troble for any LB

This is a classic case of keeping Brown in the slot where he creates mismatches for defenses. Like Welker, he is more effective in the slot vs being on the outside.

Between Sanders, Brown, and Cotchery, whoever knows the playbook the best and appears to be the most polished should play. Would think it would be Brown, but what do I know?

I think Manny should start. He's faster and a better route runner than AB

id like to point out that mike wallace became a man last year against the patriots....fighting for yards, running all the routes, going over the middle, and just doing it all....ward was knocked out of that game as well, so ward being out maybe we really get to see sanders and brown do work against this shaky secondary

I'm not sure how I really feel about this. I mean, isn't this why we got Cotchery? An experienced WR to come in when needed. Oh, and he just so happened to play against the pats twice a year as a Jet. He knows them better than sanders right?

cotchery also looked a little shaky last week in limited action....had 2 drops didnt he?

He did but wasn't that limited action and two targets practically his only playing time this year? I think I would have less of an issue about starting sanders over cotchery if we weren't playing the pats. On the other hand this could be good for Sanders' development. IDK, I'm all over the place on this one.

you put the young guys out there and tell them to be hungry, they need to score a lot of points in this game...heath and wallace are plenty veteran out there....ward being out of this one is actually a step in the right direction, cotchery in wouldnt be

If Farrier can't go, you guys think they'll move Timmions back inside where he belongs??

Receiver Hines Ward missed practiced Thursday for the second straight day with a sore ankle.
Emmanuel Sanders said he's the likely starter if Ward can't suit up against New England on Sunday.
"If he can't go, I am the starter, but as of right now, we're going with (Ward)," said Sanders, who has scored twice on 13 catches this season. "I saw him running today. Things are looking good."
Linebacker James Farrior was limited in practice with a calf injury. Linebackers James Harrison (eye) and Jason Worilds (quadricep) were among four others who didn't practice, including nose tackle Chris Hoke (neck) and guard Doug Legursky (toe).
