Tuesday with Tomlin

The biggest news to come out of Mike Tomlin's press conference today is that Casey Hampton is expected to return against New England on Sunday after sitting out the past two games with a shoulder injury.

Of course, getting a nose tackle back against New England may be a moot point. Because of New England's propensity to spread the field out against the Steelers, the nose tackle often only sees 15 to 20 plays.

Tomlin said he'll wait and see how Hines Ward is Wednesday before he makes any declarations if Ward will play or not. Ward suffered a sprained ankle against Arizona.

James Harrison, Chris Hoke, Jason Worilds and Doug Legursky are likely out.

Rookie corner Curtis Brown is suffering from back spasms.

Tomlin said he's not sure Ike Taylor will follow Wes Welker all over the field since Welker lines up so much in the slot.

Hampton who has done nothing this year should see less playing time IMO!!

We talked about this last night on the podcast with Edmund Nelson. Hampton is a situational type of player. He's so big that when you get him having to move laterally a lot he can get into trouble. With all the chop blocking going on this year he's had issues. Whereas guys like Hoke and McLendon who are lighter on their feet are able to deal with those situations better.

I'm not sure how I feel about Hampton coming back. He shouldn't be playing the entire game for sure. Rotate him in and out with some of the other guys.

Mendenhall spins and gets stuffed in front of the goal line and barely runs for a first down...other than that, he's horrible. Redman all day please.

If Hampton is ready it's a safe bet he's going to start and get his old job back. That's how the Steelers do things. If Hoke were healthy and big snack was as well, you maybe consider starting Hoke. They won't put McLendon in for Casey though; right or wrong.

Put him in the backfield on 1st and goal and have Redman or Mendy run behnd him.

Seriously, I don't think he gets a lot of push and to beat the Pats, you need push up the middle so pretty boy can't step up. McClendon did a nice job of this on SUnday vs the Cards. Have an active rotation and get penetration on Brady.

mcclendon, heyward, hood, keisel

why cant sly play OLB and have Timmons and Foote/Farrior in the ILB spots.

Sly is always first to crush someone on ST. he must be quick enough for a temp OLB..

hampton on the goal line

As lead blocker or carrying the rock ?

He can stick the ball in his belly button - he'll never fumble. Would be a great decoy on play action, throw backside to Heath or Saunders.

As lead blocker or carrying the rock ?

as a body on the 5 man defensive line, talking goal line defense.

even if casey starts he wont play many downs against the patriots who dont run very often and have a banged up BGE to begin with and 2 rookie RBs behind him.

i expect to see a lot of mclendon and hood at NT

I anticipate Brady throwing at least 40 times - might be the punch and Judy 4 yard passes to Welker, but that's what I expect. Steelers just need to light him up a few times. Last time they played, Brady was touched let alone sacked. Steelers need to do a better job disguising blitzes.

K Train

no what they need to do is stop trying to trick him, he gets it...he knows what to do. they need to beat their man one on one up front, they need to stick to their man or their zone in the back.

i feel like they try to overdo the gameplan vs the patriots too much and then welker or the TEs will just destroy the world.

timmons needs to play inside against the pats too, farrior and foote are barely bodies in the way of gronk and hernandez, they will be useless in that open space where timmons and troy need to run ****.

but if that means worilds playing outside...im not too excited

What they've done in the past doesn't work, so sooner or later they have to change something up. I'm not saying Lebeau will actually do it; he is set in his ways and believes in his defense. That's fine, it's not like it hasn't been successful. However time and time again the short passing game and a good TE just shreds the Steelers defense. He wants to play off the receivers and keep everything in front of him. When you have a QB like Brady who gets rid of it so quick you basically giving them 5 free yards for a pitch and catch backyard score fest. You play right into Brady's hands that way. He'll take that defense all day long. Jam the receivers at the line and get quick pressure from the front 3. You do that and you can disrupt what the Pats want to do. Don't do that and you're in for a long day.

worilds is hurt... sly needs to play OLB timmons back to ILB

Hampton who has done nothing this year should see less playing time IMO!!

Jason Worilds has got to get on the field at some point this year. He keeps aggravating that quad injury. His training and preseason were nothing special by any stretch. Tomlin was considering playing him on the outside opposite Woodley while Harrison has been out but that hasn't materialized. The telling story is that Mike Tomlin didn't just automatically say that Worilds would take the field on the outside, but rather said he'd wait and see. That says as much as the job Timmons' is doing as much as it does about Worilds.

Hamtpon is a situational guy like I've said before. He's struggled this season with the double teams and chop blocking. McLendon and Hoke both are lighter on their feet and seem to be able to handle those situations better, atleast so far.

Ward missing this game would not be the worst thing in the world simply because we got a glimpse of what the other 3 receivers can do last Sunday after Hines went down with the ankle. Still though, in a big game like this you want all of your ammo available because it will take a complete game to beat the Patriots.

Legursky being out is troublesome because Chris Kemoeatu continues to incur those personal fouls. Doug seemed to find a home at Left Guard in Kemo's absence. While nobody is willing to say that Legursky is the new starting Guard for the Steelers, if Kemoeatu continues the nonsensical extra curricular fouls, Tomlin may consider reinserting Legursky when he's healthy.
