Steelers sign backup tight end
Tuesday, August 02, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Steelers have signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end John Gilmore with the hope he can be the top backup to Heath Miller.

Gilmore, 31, who played at Penn State, caught 32 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns in three seasons with the Buccaneers. He previously played six seasons with the Chicago Bears, where he had 21 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

After free agent Matt Spaeth signed with the Bears, the Steelers have been looking for a No. 2 tight end. David Johnson is their other tight end, but he plays the role of H-back/fullback in the offense.

Gilmore (6-5, 257) played at Wilson High School in West Lawn, Pa.

Also, the Steelers re-signed long-snapper Greg Warren to a two-year contract.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

So what is the real story here? Johnson not the guy? Saunders just not going to be the guy either? Heath has been pretty durable in his career, but we need a capable back-up here IMO. Not sure a 31 year old who has like 50 career catches is the guy.

I think it's more of an insurance policy type of signing. Between the veterans and few faces I believe there are 5 TE's on the roster now. Obviously not all will make the team. It's a given that David Johnson and Heath are the 2 main guys, and then they'll most likely carry one more and let it be a shootout between the 2 UDFA's drafted and now Gilmore.

I'd like to see Saunders get a shot at it personally.

Same with me. If he has the upside that is reported, he would be a better investment than a 31 year old player nobody's ever heard of. Had not a clue who he was.

Taking Free Agency by Storm or being taken..interesting!

Overall the Steelers are being pretty status quo. They like to take care of their own while mixing in a few new faces each year. They will generally resign a previous player or bring a veteran rather than take too many chances on young guys.

@AdamSchefter: ESPN's John Clayton and Mike Sando are reporting former Raiders TE Zach Miller has reached an agreement with the Seahawks.

Zach Miller would have been better than Gilmore...I had forgotten he was ever a Buc. Miller would have wanted more money, tho...he's used to being a starter, not a backup.

I don't really see the problem here. It is not a wow signing by any mean or stretch, but you can't really add starters only and as such, this signing is just an insurance signing in terms of depth.

With that being said.. Give me Samuel already!?
